To help mark Ladies' Day at Britain's Grand National horse racing festival, Olivia's hats -- which can cost up to $600 -- were placed on these equine models as part of a special photo shoot.

Around 50,000 racegoers are expected at the racing day in Liverpool, which has gained a reputation for flamboyant outfits and rowdy revelers.

"We wanted to celebrate all the fabulous style you see at Ladies' Day each year," said Richard Mayfield, from portrait company Venture Photography, which took the unusual images. "And we wanted to have fun with it, showing the horses all dolled-up for a day at the races."

The four-legged models ranged from thoroughbreds, to show horses, and smaller ponies used to teach children riding. Each was accompanied by their owner. "We walked the horses around the studio until they felt comfortable -- they were very well behaved, each session only took a few minutes," said Mayfield.

The assistants chose hats that best suited each horse's personality. "Some were quite cheeky, others more regal with their heads up," said Mayfield.

The hardest part of the photo shoot was getting the animals to look at the camera -- "We were making lots of noise to capture their attention. I was surprised by how much their different personalities came through in the images."

"I spend my days creating weird and wonderful designs for fashion-forward ladies, but never did I think I'd be styling my hats on models of the four-legged variety," said Olivia.
