With the worldwide consumption of wine increasing and the production decreasing, Old World and New World producers alike are trying to keep up with demand. In South Africa, Chris Alheit tests one of his wines in Hemelrand in Western Cape. He is determined to create not only world-beating wine, but one which is distinctly South African.

Other Old World producers are experimenting with their bottling techniques. A bottle of sparkling wine that was stored underwater -- and has a dead eel attached -- sits on a table in Chiavari, Italy.

Lugano is experimenting by storing his wine three to four years in the sea at a depth of about 197 feet and some two miles offshore, where the water temperature remains constant.

The grape harvest in Ribeira Sacra takes place along the slopes of the Sil and Miño rivers in Galicia, Spain, where the vines are planted on step terraces, often with limited access by vehicle. Red wines are the most popular in the area and the Mencia grape is the most cultivated.
