Not your usual arts and crafts —
The second Maker Camp, a virtual summer camp for young do-it-yourselfers, starts July 8. The camp is conducted online over Google+ Hangouts, although some libraries are hosting in-person versions. Here, lab supervisor Sam Freeman demonstrates a 3-D printer for some future campers. The Maker Media lab is filled with tools used for creating and testing new projects.

A hexacopter test flight —
At the Maker Media headquarters in Sebastapol, California, staffers and interns test out a hexacopter on the lawn.

Makers' machinery —
The lab also has some heavy-duty machinery, such as CNC manufacturing devices, used for elaborate, "don't try this at home" projects.

Testing a Tesla coil —
Brian Melani, an engineering intern at Maker Media, demonstrates a mini-Tesla coil, or electrical circuit. The test project could end up as a project in a future issue of Make magazine.

Maker Camp's studio —
Many of this summer's Maker Camp broadcasts will take place in this prefabricated studio the staff built near the Maker Media organic garden.

Potato cannon, anyone? —
A Maker Media staffer shows off a potato air cannon to a group of kids. For safety reasons, they shoot ping-pong balls out of the cannon instead of potatoes.
