Born in Seattle in 1942, Hendrix taught himself to play guitar as a teenager and played in high school bands before enlisting in the Army, according to <a href="index.php?page=&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.rollingstone.com%2Fmusic%2Fartists%2Fjimi-hendrix%2Fbiography" target="_blank" target="_blank">Rolling Stone</a>. By the early '60s, Hendrix had been discharged and was playing backup for acts including Sam Cooke, B.B. King, Little Richard and the Isley Brothers.
