A 14-year-old boy was killed and more than 30 people were injured when a tornado hit several cities in Ibaraki prefecture Sunday, local police said.

Officials are still to confirm the extent of the damage, but in the immediate aftermath of the tornado they said electricity had been cut to more than 12,000 homes in Tsukuba, Hitachi Ohmiya, and Shukusei.

The strong winds flipped cars, brought down powerlines and sent debris from building flying through the sky. Tiles were ripped off houses, exposing wooden beams and bringing ceilings crashing in on homes.

After the winds died down, people wandered out of their homes to survey the damage. Tornados are extremely rare in Japan. The country's Meterological Agency issued an alert for strong winds and rain in a wide area of east and central Japan due to unstable air pressure.
