Seth Owusu founded the Entire Village Computers Organization (EVCO) in 2004 in a bid to improve computer literacy in his native Ghana and other African countries.

The charity donates reconditioned old computers from the developed world and ships them to Africa.

EVCO also runs training workshops, provides technical support and maintains an ongoing relationship with the recipients of their computers.

"The kids the first time are scared to touch the keyboard and the mouse, so you see a kid sit there like this and just look at the screen," says Owusu."But you go there the next year when we do a follow-up visit and they want to grab me and show me what they can do with the computer."

Owusu believes that communities in rural areas can benefit when computers are introduced in local schools.

"The whole concept about our donation process is first, not just the computers, but getting the entire community involved in the process," says Owusu. "That makes them part of the process, so they know the kids are learning and so they can feel proud to have them go to school rather than tell them to go to the farm."

Since 2004, EVCO says it has installed and donated 24 computer labs in village schools and communities in Ghana and Nigeria.

Owusu wants to run EVCO as a full-time project in order to be able to bring his project to as many rural areas as possible.
