Technology footprint on Earth —
Canadian anthropologist Felix Pharand has created a series of computer-generated images that highlight the spread of technology on Earth. Here air-traffic routes between North America and Europe are shown on a satellite image of the Atlantic.

Technology footprint on Earth —
Major road and rail networks in Europe, along with transmission lines and underwater cables are superimposed above the continent's cities illuminated at night.

The spread of technology —
Shipping lanes funnel into major ports along the U.S. coast. Pharand used government sources like the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for data to piece together the visualizations.

Technology footprint on Earth —
Pharand is the founding director of Globaia, an organization that aims to highlight the impact of human activities on the world. This image shows man-made technologies in Africa.

Technology footprint on Earth —
The Indian Ocean comes alive with electric blue shipping lane trails. Pharand's visualizations come in the same week as the U.N. says that global population figures are set to reach seven billion.
