Team USA wins the men's hockey gold medal!
Team USA scores the crucial overtime goal to seal the win after a thrilling, instant-classic gold medal game.
Matthews, Boldy and Hughes on the ice for Team USA
Auston Matthews, Matt Boldy and Quinn Hughes will start the 3-on-3 sudden death overtime for Team USA.
Boldy has a shot on goal, but it was deflected by Canadian goalie Jordan Binnington.
Overtime is underway in gold medal game
Who wants to be a hero?
We’re now underway in this sudden death overtime with the gold medal on the line between Team USA and Canada.
Let’s go!
Canada ready to challenge Hellebuyck

Canada’s 41 shots on goal are the most Team USA has faced in this tournament.
Hellebuyck has been a brick house in this gold medal game, but can he hold on for a high-stakes overtime? We shall see.
Another OT win for Canada over the USA in 4 Nations Face-Off last year

Just over a year ago, Canada defeated Team USA 3-2 in overtime to win the NHL’s 4 Nations Face-Off Championship game in Boston.
Canadian Connor McDavid scored the game winning goal. McDavid is in his 11th NHL season, but this is his first Olympics.
Nothing is better than a rivalry like this one. It’s time for some free hockey.
Shades of 2010? But there's no Sidney Crosby this time
If you’re starting to get déjà vu, it’s understandable.
The 2010 gold medal game between the USA and Canada also went to overtime – that time, it was after a 2-2 draw following 60 minutes of action.
Sidney Crosby was the hero who stepped up in Vancouver, but Canada is without its captain fantastic this time around.
Can anybody replicate that moment of magic from “Sid the Kid”?
The nervous energy in the arena is intense and palpable

Holy smokes.
There is so much nervous energy in this building right now. Players are exhausted, fans are wrung out like fish rags, reporters are stressed.
Canada had so many opportunities in that third period – at least five times, the goal was there for the taking. And nothing. In fact, the stats tell the tale with Canada having 41 shots compared to Team USA’s 26.
This is going down in history, no matter how it ends.
How does Olympic overtime hockey work?

Overtime in a gold medal game is a little different.
Teams will play 3-on-3 sudden death hockey for 20 minutes with the next goal – fittingly called the golden goal – winning this final.
Here we go.
The gold medal game is going to overtime!

And that’s it for the third period and we are heading to sudden-death overtime!
The USA and Canada are 1-1 through 60 minutes. Now it gets even more intense, if that’s possible.
Canada goes close in chaotic end to game
Macklin Celebrini had the chance to be the hero.
The teenager had two glorious opportunities to end this thing in regulation but, crucially, he couldn’t convert.
Wow.
USA kills the penalty with a minute to go
It’s back to even strength with a minute to go as the USA kills off Jack Hughes’ penalty.
Crucial penalty on USA changes the game

The twists and turns don’t stop coming.
Team USA’s Jack Hughes picks up a penalty and the power-play advantage for the US is snuffed out as he goes into the box.
After no goals in the short 4-on-4 period, it’s a Canadian power play that on which they’ll look to score the winner.
The drama.
A massive moment as USA gets a 4-minute power play

A double-minor high sticking penalty from Canada’s Sam Bennett will give Team USA a four-minute power play after Jack Hughes is bloodied.
The NBC broadcast says two teeth on the American forward are cracked in half.
The Americans’ offense has been slow, so an opportunity like this can change this game.
Is Canada ever going to score a second?

It’s starting to get a bit silly now. How has Canada not scored?
This time, Brad Marchand fires a shot on goal which is saved by USA goalie Connor Hellebuyck.
A goalmouth scramble follows with Canada’s Nick Suzuki and Devon Toews trying to force the puck in.
But with Hellebuyck beaten, somehow the USA’s Charlie McAvoy clears it off the line.
Hellebuyck saves yet another shot and the US gets a lucky break

Hellebuyck will not let down.
Canada has 39 shots on goal and it seems like the puck is constantly in Team USA’s territory, but Hellebuyck hasn’t let any of these close shots slide.
The Canadian fans are irate in Milan as there’s a shout for a too-many-men-on-the-ice penalty that isn’t whistled. A lucky break for the USA.
Nathan MacKinnon misses huge chance for Canada

How many chances are Canada going to pass up on here?
This time it’s Nathan MacKinnon who misses the chance to put Canada in front.
He’s got a wide open net to shoot at and he misses the goal. It’s a great opportunity but, uncharacteristically, MacKinnon wastes it.
Johnny Gaudreau's family in attendance at men's gold medal hockey game
In 2024, NHL star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew were fatally struck by a suspected drunk driver while riding bikes on a New Jersey roadway, just hours before they were to serve as groomsmen in their sister’s wedding.
Their deaths left the sports world mourning and have served as extra motivation for Team USA today. Johnny would have likely been part of his nation’s Olympic campaign in Italy, and his family is in Milan to watch the gold medal game today.
Defenseman Zach Werenski said of Johnny, his former Columbus Blue Jackets teammate: “I know how bad he wanted this (making Team USA). He played in a number of world championships hoping for an opportunity for best on best.
“So it’s super special to see his jersey hanging (in the locker room) and we’re playing for him and trying to make him proud.”
Werenski said Team USA is looking to “make him proud” in this final.

Where is Team USA's offense?

It is all Canada on offense, with little to no action from Team USA.
Time is ticking, but it seems all the Americans can do is defend.
In some sports, defense wins championships – but this is the gold medal game at the Olympics. A 46-year drought is on the line. It’s a tie game.
Team USA’s attack needs to make a play.
It's all Canada early on in third period
Canada fans surely can’t believe what they are seeing.
This time, it’s Macklin Celebrini who has the chance for Canada with the teenager breaking away to go one-on-one with Connor Hellebuyck.
But Hellebuyck does it yet again!
I’m running out of superlatives for the USA goalie. Incredible.
Canada misses a near-open net

Connor Hellebuyck, take a bow.
Devon Toews had the chance to tuck the puck into what looked like a wide open net, but somehow Hellebuyck pulled out the save of a lifetime.
Toews won’t want to relive that one, that’s for sure.
