A surprising day as NHL players return to Olympic hockey
Today is the first time since 2014 that NHL players are competing in the Winter Olympics and, uh, it’s not really going as expected.
Finland, with 24 of its 25 players on NHL rosters, got absolutely destroyed in the opening game by Slovakia. Just seven Slovakian players on the Olympic roster play in the NHL.
No matter: A smooth 4-1 victory for the Slovaks, breaking away after being tied 1-1 early in the second period.
Now in the night game, an even bigger shocker is shaping up.
Sweden is considered one of the favorites for the gold medal and is literally full of NHL players – all 25 players play in the world’s top league.
But as things stand halfway through the game, the host nation Italy is tied 2-2 with the Swedes.
Italy has a grand total of zero players on a NHL roster.
Stay tuned, if you can peel your eyes away from the ice dancing dramatics.
Team USA gets a new shot at a podium finish at the ice dancing medal event

American figure skaters Emilea Zingas and Vadym Kolesnik revived Team USA’s chance to possibly win a medal with their ice dancing routine tonight at the Milan Ice Skating Arena.
They are currently standing on top of the leaderboard with a score of 206.72.
But remember, five performances remain. So this could all change!
Figure skate ice dancing is heating up
Just how many ways could I say “stunning”?
We’re in the third set of teams performing on the ice now. And already this group has thwarted the hopes of USA’s Christina Carreira and Anthony Ponomarenko for a medal finish.
France, Spain and Canada lead the board for now. But if the last few performances are any indicator, we can very well expect it to change

A gold medal. A new record.
Not a bad start to Jordan Stolz’s Olympic Games.

Stolz will be back Saturday for the 500 meters. He’s competing in four events while in Italy.

Team USA's Christina Carreira and Anthony Ponomarenko lead figure skate ice dancing

Cheers erupted at the Milan Ice Skating Arena as Team USA’s Christina Carreira and Anthony Ponomarenko took the ice and danced to the soundtrack of “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer.”
They breezed past all the performers so far to take the leading position in this medal event. Ten teams are yet to perform, among them fellow Americans Evan Bates and Madison Chock.
It’s been so stunning to watch as figure skaters outdo each other in this ice dancing event.
Georgia brought the most elegant routine took the leading spot only to be outdone by their Finnish competitors.
Current standing are as follows: USA, Finland and Georgia.
This post has been updated with additional latest information.
3 Americans set to qualify for final round of men's snowboarding halfpipe...so far
Team USA’s Jake Pates clinched a twelfth place spot, setting him up to scrape into the final round of men’s snowboarding halfpipe.

Japan leading with second and third place in men's snowboard qualifying round

Japan’s Yuto Totsuka and Ryusei Yamada are in second and third place of the qualifying round.
Yuto jumped to second after landing a huge triple cork 1440, which Japan’s Ayumu Hirano pulled out in his gold medal run in Beijing.
Team USA’s Alessandro Barbieri, 17, slipped to fourth after falling in his second run.
The top twelve athletes will advance to the final round.
Three-time Olympian Shaun White watches men's snowboarding halfpipe qualifying round

Shaun White is back at the Olympics – as a tourist and commentator, that is.
The Team USA legend is watching the men’s snowboarding halfpipe qualifying from the sidelines.
Second run of men's snowboarding halfpipe qualifying round is underway
The first run ended with snowboarding legend Scotty James from Australia in first place with 94 points. Two teenagers take second and third place so far: Japan’s Yamada Ryusei, 19, and Team USA’s Alessandro Barbieri, 17.
Stay tuned for more updates as the next run unfolds.
Team USA's Alessandro Barbieri is competing against his idols

Alessandro Barbieri looked up to snowboarding legends like Hirano Ayumu and Scotty James growing up. When he debuted in the 2023 World Cup at 15 years old, his idols became his rivals.
At this year’s Winter Olympics, the now 17-year-old is competing against his own snowboarding role models once again – even beating them, too.
Barbieri has held onto third place in the men’s snowboarding halfpipe qualifying round so far, three spots ahead of Ayumu and two behind James.
“Going up against grown adults when I was 15 made me compete with the mindset that I’m not expected to make the podium,” Barbieri said in an Olympic interview. “I probably don’t have a chance.”
Czech figure skaters lead ice dancing so far with a dramatic routine

The team from the Czech Republic is currently leading in the figure skating ice dance event at the Milan Ice Skating Arena, with five teams having performed so far.
Other teams who have performed so far: Great Britain, Australia, Spain and Sweden.
Italy duo wins men’s luge doubles

Italy’s Emanuel Rieder and Simon Kainzwaldner earned a men’s luge doubles gold in front of an enthusiastic home crowd with a combined time of 1:45.086.
Thomas Steu and Wolfgang Kindl of Austria followed with silver, then Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt with a bronze for Germany.
USA’s young duo of Marcus Mueller and Ansel Haugsjaa fell short of the podium, suffering a mistake about two-thirds of the way into their final run that dropped them from the top spot into sixth.
The pair won their first World Cup men’s doubles race on home soil in Lake Placid, New York, in December.
Dutch fans stick around to watch Jordan Stolz receive his gold medal

Although it didn’t really go their way in the end, most of the Dutch fans inside the arena stay in their seats to watch the medal ceremony.
Not only do they have Jenning de Boo’s silver to celebrate but they also have a lot of love for Stolz. So much so that they’ve given him a nickname that has kind of stuck.
Due to his dominance in recent years, Dutch fans have dubbed him “Straaljager” which means “Fighter Jet.” He certainly lived up to that today.
Two more pairs to go in men’s doubles luge, Italy leads

In what’s considered the fastest Olympic sport, the luge podium is almost always decided by the smallest fractions of time.
Germany’s Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt were lead with a combined time of 1:45.176, but Italians Emanuel Rieder and Simon Kainzwaldner just took the lead.
USA’s Marcus Mueller and Ansel Haugsjaa’s first run led over Austria’s Thomas Steu and Wolfgang Kindl by a narrow three thousandths of a second as the men’s luge doubles final run comes to a close.
Steu and Kindl have been competing in luge team relays since 2016, but recently threw doubles into the mix and haven’t looked back. The Austrian powerhouse duo has a slew of World Cup wins in the event and a World Championship from 2025.
However, Mueller and Haugsjaa’s 52.482 second slide from earlier earned the pair a track record.
Men’s luge doubles underway, USA pair leads
USA’s Zachary DiGregorio and Sean Hollander hold the lead in today’s men’s luge doubles final run with a combined time of 1:45.467.
Latvia trails the American pair, just 0.216 seconds back. However, anything can happen in a race like this.
Jordan Stolz lives up to expectations at Winter Olympics

Many looked at Jordan Stolz as the man to beat in the men’s 1000m speed skate and he simply proved to be too good once again.
Not only does he win a gold medal, but he can now boast a new Olympic record as well.
His time of 1:06.28 was half a second quicker than Dutch athlete Jenning de Boo, who finished with the silver medal. China’s Ning Zhongyan also looked very happy with his bronze medal, skating around wrapped in his nation’s flag.
But the night was all about Stolz who seemed to take all the pressure in his stride.
“The pressure leading up to it was quite high, but it is more so repetition,” Stolz said after the race. “It is not like it (the Olympic Winter Games) is different from any other race. It is just the fact you waited the last four years to finally get here again, and you get one shot to try and battle, which I was able to do. (It is a) feeling like no other.”
Jordan Stolz wins speed skating gold in dramatic final
Joep Wennemars can’t do quite enough on the final run, meaning Jordan Stolz wins gold in the men’s 1000m speed skate for Team USA.
He’s out on the track already, waving a US flag above his head.
Snowboard superstar Scotty James knocks US from the lead

The Australian snowboarder is the first competitor in the snowboarding halfpipe qualifying round to score in the 90s.
James won halfpipe bronze at Pyeongchang in 2018, and silver four years later in Beijing.
The world champion is known as a halfpipe trailblazer for being the first snowboarder to land the switch backside double cork 1260 in 2018.
Team USA’s Alessandro Barbieri, the 17-year-old nicknamed “The Chef,” is now in third place.
Joep Wennemars is warming up on the ice ahead of final attempt
Huge drama in the men’s speed skating tonight and it all comes down to this.
The Dutch fans stand to applaud Joep Wennemars as he slowly starts warming up around the track.
He knows what he has to do. Penny for his thoughts right now.
