Chinese leader Xi Jinping rolled out the red carpet Thursday for US President Donald Trump’s first trip to China since 2017.
The two leaders exchanged a warm handshake after Trump arrived at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People, kicking off an elaborate welcome ceremony which featured a military band playing “The Star-Spangled Banner” and schoolchildren jumping and cheering with pompoms.
Xi hailed the US-China relationship as the world’s most consequential, telling Trump: “We must make it work and never mess it up.” Earlier in the summit, Xi warned Taiwan “is the most important issue in China-US relations” and it could create a “very dangerous situation” if mishandled.
