Chinese leader Xi Jinping rolled out the red carpet Thursday for US President Donald Trump’s first trip to China since 2017.

The two leaders exchanged a warm handshake after Trump arrived at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People, kicking off an elaborate welcome ceremony which featured a military band playing “The Star-Spangled Banner” and schoolchildren jumping and cheering with pompoms.

Xi hailed the US-China relationship as the world’s most consequential, telling Trump: “We must make it work and never mess it up.” Earlier in the summit, Xi warned Taiwan “is the most important issue in China-US relations” and it could create a “very dangerous situation” if mishandled.

Here are some of the stories that made headlines over the past week, as well as some photos that caught our eye.

Prosecutors at the International Criminal Court have issued an arrest warrant for Dela Rosa, accusing him of conspiring with former President Rodrigo Duterte in alleged crimes against humanity during a brutal anti-drug campaign that killed thousands. Dela Rosa holed up in the Senate building for two nights, pleading in a livestreamed press conference on Facebook not to be sent to The Hague in the Netherlands to face the charges. He reiterated his position that the ICC has no jurisdiction to arrest him without approval from the local Supreme Court. The ICC arrest warrant alleges that Dela Rosa used his position as national police chief to implement “tokhang”-style killings nationally during Duterte’s presidency. Dela Rosa has repeatedly denied the allegations.
