Tributes continue to pour in for Diogo Jota after the Portuguese soccer star died in a car crash in Spain on Thursday.
Jota was 28. His 25-year-old brother, André Silva, also died in the accident.
A wake was held Friday morning at a church in the brothers’ hometown of Gondomar. Portugal’s president and prime minister both were in attendance. A funeral is set to to take place on Saturday.
A makeshift memorial was also seen outside Anfield, the home of Jota’s club Liverpool. Jota played an important role in Liverpool’s recent title-winning season, scoring six goals and providing four assists in 26 appearances.
Jota also earned 49 caps for the Portuguese national team, winning the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.
