Firefighters spent an hour cutting Robert Kubica from his rally car at an event on the eve of the 2011 Formula 1 season.

It was thought the resultant injuries had put an end to his Formula 1 career but he's back on the grid for the Australian Grand Prix.

Kubica will be in the colours of the Williams team, which boasts a rich history in the sport but has struggled to make its mark in recent seasons.

The Polish driver knows it is beyond the realms of possibility to double his tally of grand prix victories. His one win was at the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix.

It was at the same circuit the previous year that he suffered a dramatic high-speed crash only to walk away relatively unscathed.

The first signs of an F1 return came at Renault for whom he tested but the team opted against signing him.

The 34-year-old had resigned himself to a career in his second-choice motorsport career of rallying.

In all, he boasted 11 top-10 finishes in the World Rally Championship, his last in Britain back in 2015 (pictured).
