Lucy Gossage is a cancer doctor by profession but has become one of the world's leading Ironman triathletes.

Gossage is lining up at the World Championships in Kona, Hawaii, but her aspirations to be No.1 are on hold.

Gossage has endured a long and lonely road back to recovery after breaking her collarbone in a training ride two months ago.

She now faces the arduous task in 30-degree heat of first tackling a 3.85-kilometer swim...

...which is followed by 180.25km in the saddle for the second leg...

...before taking to the course in the final leg, a marathon, against the world's best distance triathletes.

Gossage has no idea how she might fare in Kona where she was in the top 10 last year.

But after the race, any potential celebrations will be shortlived as she returns to work as a cancer doctor.

Gossage says in her athletic life, she chooses to suffer while her cancer patients are suffering without a choice.
