Britain's Johanna Konta, ranked 14th, needed treatment after dropping to the court. Steamy conditions seemingly took their toll but Konta ended up beating Tsvetana Pironkova 6-2 5-7 6-2.

Former Australian Open finalist Dominika Cibulkova was floored, too, by a hamstring issue but also won against Evgeniya Rodina 6-7 (5-7) 6-2 6-2.

Petra Kvitova, the twice Wimbledon champion, defeated Cagla Buyukakcay 7-6 (7-3) 6-3.

Last year's finalist, Roberta Vinci, moved into the third round by getting past Christina McHale 6-1 6-3.
