U.S. star Sam Querrey produced the performance of his life to overcome defending champion and world No. 1 Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon.

Querrey, who had led by two sets to love overnight before the game was suspended for rain, held his nerve in a fourth-set tiebreak to win 7-6 6-1 3-6 7-6.

Djokovic, a three-time Wimbledon winner, was magnanimous in defeat to a player ranked 40 places below him and seeded 28th for the tournament.

When play resumed on Saturday, Djokovic gave himself of pulling off a comeback by taking the third set. The Serb star had not lost a match at a grand slam since the 2015 French Open final.

This was Djokovic's first loss before the quarterfinal of a grand slam tournament since 2009, when he went out in the third round at the French Open.

Querrey then defeated France's Nicolas Mahut to set up a quarterfinal clash with Canadian sixth seed Milos Raonic.
