Gustav Nyquist of the Detroit Red Wings is the inspiration behind the horse of the same name. Nyquist's owner Reddam is a lifelong Red Wings fan. Although he has traded texts with the player, they have yet to meet in person.

Erik Johnson of the NHL's Colorado Avalanche is a close friend of Reddam's and has co-invested in horses with him. However, Nyquist -- named after a rival Detroit Red Wing -- is not one of them.
