Paris staged its first-ever Formula E race for electric cars at the weekend.

The event was held in the heart of the chic seventh arrondissement -- home to the Eiffel Tower and Les Invalides complex.

There was "a high-level security presence" at the Paris ePrix. The French capital was the target of terror attacks last November and remains on high alert.

There was a 20,000 sell-out crowd for the first Formula E race in Paris.

Those without tickets lined the fences along the circuit to try and sneak a peak of the racing action.

These fans went to new heights to try and watch the historic race around the Invalides in Paris on April 23 2016.

"Formula E is what got me into cars," explains Milo from London, who is seen outside the garage of his favorite driver, Sebastien Buemi, in Paris. Dad Hector says his son discovered Formula E by watching online.

French Prime Minister Manuel Valls and Paris' Mayor Anne Hidalgo are among the dignitaries lending their support to the Paris ePrix.

Formula E's reigning champion Nelson Piquet Jr, seen here with a grid girl wearing a 'I Heart Paris' t-shirt, says: "Paris has got to easily be in the top-three venues -- maybe the best one."

It was standing room only on a stylish Paris starting-grid before the race. Celebrites included model Eva Herzigova and British socialite Tamara Beckwith (pictured right).

Lucas Di Grassi motored into history as the first driver to win the Paris ePrix but the celebrations weren't restricted to the podium after a positive weekend in Paris.
