Roger Federer began the quest for an eighth Wimbledon title by cruising past Bosnia's Damir Dzumhur in only one hour, 8 minutes amid London's heatwave.

It was the second time Federer beat Dzumhur in a month, having also ousted him in the third round at the French Open. He will next face big-serving American Sam Querrey.

Two-time champion Rafael Nadal eased past Brazil's Thomaz Belucci in three sets. The only blip for him was falling behind by an early break in the third.

The Spaniard will have to be sharp in the second round, since he meets the huge-serving German Dustin Brown. Brown beat Nadal on grass in Germany last year at a Wimbledon warmup.

Andy Murray, the home favorite and 2013 champion, had the toughest day of the trio of Big Four members who played Tuesday. He was in danger of losing the second set to Mikhail Kukushkin before rallying to also prevail in three sets.

Petra Kvitova, even in the heat, probably barely broke a sweat. The reigning women's champion, right, crushed Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens in 35 minutes for the loss of one game.

It has been a turbulent season for the world No. 2. She took an extended break from the game after mental exhaustion and didn't play a Wimbledon warmup because of illness.

Kvitova routed Eugenie Bouchard in last year's final. But Bouchard won't be playing in this year's finale. Her slump continued, losing to Chinese qualifier Ying-Ying Duan in straight sets.

And Simona Halep, the world No. 3, fell to Jana Cepelova in straight sets. It's a worrying time for Halep, who lost in the second round at the French Open and recently cut ties with her coach.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, a former Wimbledon semifinalist, had reason to celebrate after topping tricky left-hander Gilles Muller in five sets.

It was that kind of a day at Wimbledon -- taking a nap in the sun. Temperatures are expected to soar to 33 degrees Celsius (91 Fahrenheit) on Wednesday.
