It was that kind of a day for Maria Sharapova. The defending champion fell in straight sets to Lucie Safarova.

Defeated in the fourth round, it was Sharapova's earliest exit at Roland Garros since 2010.

Even though Safarova had lost four in a row to Sharapova, the last three went to three sets. On Monday, the Czech finally managed to register a victory.

Safarova, a semifinalist at Wimbledon last year, is on the verge of cracking the top 10.

World No. 1 Serena Williams almost exited, too. But she dug deep to beat fellow American Sloane Stephens in three sets after dropping the opener 6-1.

In the men's draw, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic set up a blockbuster quarterfinal. Nadal beat American Jack Sock in four sets. Nadal lost his first set of the tournament.

Djokovic remains unblemished. He routed home hope Richard Gasquet in straight sets. He'll try to beat Nadal at the French Open for the first time.

Roger Federer completed a four-set win over another home hope, Gael Monfils. They were tied 1-1 in sets when darkness halted play Sunday. Federer spent only 64 minutes on court.

Andy Murray remains perfect on clay this season. He needed four sets to see off a third Frenchman, Jeremy Chardy.

Murray faces a tough test in the quarterfinals, though. He plays former French Open finalist David Ferrer and the Spaniard has never lost to Murray on clay.
