Heather Mills is bidding to become the first disabled female skier to hit the 200km/h mark on a run in France.

Mills is a member of the GB Paralympic team and has been skiing since the age of 21, learning the discipline in the former Yugoslavia.

But she lost a leg after being hit by a police motorcycle while crossing the road in 1993 and did not return to the slopes for a few years.

Having tackled ski jumping for a British television series, she now has speed in her sights. Asked why, she says, "Why not?"

The idea for the record attempt was first spawned in Australia and she has been encouraged by the legendary Franz Klammer.

More typically on the slopes, Mills is usually accustomed to going around gates in slalom than breaking the speed barrier.

After this record, she has her sights set on trying to qualify for the next Winter Paralympics in 2018 when she will be 50.

Mills, though, is still best known as the woman who married Paul McCartney at a star-studded ceremony in the summer of 2002.

But the relationship steadily soured and the couple were finally divorced in an acrimonious split in 2008.

It led Mills to be vilified by the British media, who branded her "Lady Mucca", a stance she believes was unwarranted.
