Moth sailing is fast and furious -- sailors are more like pilots as their vessels fly over the water.

A fast-growing discipline, it is like a who's who of the sailing glitterati which competes in the diminutive boats.

The boats themselves fly, or more accurately foil, over the water seemingly defying the laws of physics in the process.

January marked the World Championship in Sorrento, Australia, where a host of big names competed.

Peter Burling, recently appointed as Team New Zealand helmsman for the America's Cup, came out on top.

Among his closest challengers was two-time moth world champion Nathan Outteridge.

Andrew McDougall (pictured right talking to Mainsail's Shirley Robertson) has been the design lead in the discipline's recent history.
