Listen: Portland dispatchers respond to shooting
A man shot by federal agents in Portland on Thursday made a 911 call shortly after the shooting, which also wounded his wife.
Portland Area Fire and Rescue then dispatched responders.
This is some of what you can hear them saying in the audio above:
Federal officials said Border Patrol shot two people during the incident.
The couple’s condition is currently unknown.
High school classmate of Renee Good describes her as "a gift to the world"
A classmate of Minneapolis shooting victim Renee Good has paid tribute to her, a day after she was killed by an ICE agent.
Willo Schubarth and Good, then named Renee Ganger, attended Colorado’s Coronado High School together and were in the same graduating class, CNN affiliate KRDO reported.
Laying flowers at the site where she was killed, Schubarth told KRDO that Good was one of the first people to reach out to him when he joined the school.
“So it was quite a shock and then to have…someone that warm was a gift. She was a gift to the world, honestly,” he added.
Schubarth said he admired Renee’s creative spirit, particularly her guitar skills.
Vance's claim that ICE agent in Minneapolis shooting has "absolute immunity" is wrong, former attorney says

Vice President JD Vance’s claim that the ICE agent who shot and killed a woman in Minneapolis has federal immunity is wrong, former Hennepin County attorney Michael Freeman told CNN.
“The vice president is wrong. There are claims in some cases of federal immunity. I do not believe that would apply in this case,” said Freeman, who filed criminal charges against former police officer Derek Chauvin over the murder of George Floyd in 2020.
Vance had called the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good a “tragedy of her own making,” adding that the agent is “protected by absolute immunity” and that “he was just doing his job.”
Freeman also noted that Good was unarmed. “This idea that she weaponized her vehicle is ludicrous,” he said.
“But from what I have seen so far, I believe he should be charged.”
Minneapolis protesters set up barricades blocking traffic to shooting site

Protesters in Minneapolis have put up makeshift barriers, blocking vehicle access to the nearest intersection to the shooting location, according to CNN’s Omar Jimenez, who is on the scene.
A sign on the barricades — made of planks of wood, chairs, and traffic-control equipment — declares the area a “no ICE zone,” and a small fire has been set behind it.
Gov. Walz declares Friday "Day of Unity" to honor Renee Good

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz has declared Friday, January 9, a “Day of Unity” to honor the memory of Renee Good, the 37-year old woman shot and killed by an ICE agent Wednesday.
Walz called on Minnesotans and people nationwide to observe a moment of silence at 10 a.m. to remember Good.
“Now is a time to mourn together, in peace, unity, and service. People across Minnesota will peacefully stand up for shared American values,” Walz said in a proclamation.
The proclamation encourages neighbors, families, and community members to support one another “in our time of grief.” It also calls on churches and faith organizations to open their doors, urges support for local businesses, and invites Minnesotans to participate in acts of service for their communities.”
“This is a moment for us to use our collective voice to stand for decency and democracy,” Walz added.
Minneapolis mayor says he’s skeptical of federal investigation into Renee Good’s killing
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey cast doubt on federal authorities’ investigation into the fatal shooting of Renee Good after state investigators from Minnesota were blocked from participating.
Frey told CNN’s Laura Coates the probe was originally presented as a “joint investigation” alongside Minnesota’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, but federal officials reversed course and blocked state investigators “from getting very important investigative materials.”
Frey, a Democrat, said he’s “super skeptical” of whatever result comes out of the federal investigation, especially based on the narrative already presented by Trump administration officials.
Frey accused the White House and members of the administration of “blaming the victim” in Good’s death and argued that video of the incident does not align with their version of events.
Four videos taken of the scene and reviewed by CNN show nuance around the fatal encounter. You can view our analysis here.
ICE agent who shot Minneapolis woman was injured in a traffic stop last year
ICE agent Jonathan Ross, who fatally shot Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis, was dragged and injured in a traffic stop last year, according to court documents. CNN’s Randi Kaye reports:

CBP agents clash with community members outside Minneapolis school
A heated confrontation involving Border Patrol agents and community members erupted outside a Minneapolis public school on Wednesday, video obtained by CNN shows.
In the video, one person and one agent are seen falling to the ground, a border patrol agent visibly shoves somebody, and a person is being handcuffed and detained by multiple agents.
Nicole Lundheim told CNN she’d just arrived to pick up her child from Roosevelt High School when she noticed the agents.
Three people were “bumrushed,” Lundheim told CNN’s Leigh Waldman, and taken away as residents chanted “you don’t belong here” and “these are our streets.” She said the scene unfolded in “total chaos.”
A DHS spokesperson said agents were chasing a US citizen “actively trying to impede operations,” and the pursuit ended near the school.
Students and staff were never targeted, DHS said, saying a teacher assaulted an agent and the crowd threw objects and paint, prompting “targeted crowd control.”
CNN has reached out to Roosevelt High School for comment.
Minneapolis public schools are closed Thursday and Friday “due to safety concerns,” the board said Wednesday.
This post has been updated to revise the source of the video obtained by CNN.
Oregon attorney general announces investigation into shooting by Border Patrol agent in Portland
State investigators in Oregon are opening a formal investigation into the shooting of two people by a Border Patrol agent in Portland today, Attorney General Dan Rayfield said in a statement posted today on X.
The attorney general said Oregon officials “have been clear about our concerns with excessive use of force by federal agents in Portland and nationally” and that today’s shooting “only heightens the need for transparency and accountability.”
Portland Mayor Keith Wilson has called on Immigration and Customs Enforcement to halt all operations in the city until the shooting is fully investigated. Portland Police Chief Bob Day said this evening city officials “do not know the facts” around the shooting and offered support to federal agents in their investigation.
Hundreds take part in vigils across Portland after shootings in the city and in Minneapolis

Hundreds of people in Portland gathered at three separate vigils to mourn the victims shot by ICE and Border Patrol agents in recent days.
One of the vigils was taking place at Terry Schunk Plaza, across the street from City Hall, another at Pioneer Courthouse Square, and a third outside an ICE facility in South Portland, CNN affiliate KGW reported.
Videos from KGW show people outside Terry Schunk Plaza holding candles and chanting “abolish ICE”.

“We know that this kind of violence has been happening, that ICE has been doing these things, but it was shocking to see it happen in that way, to see someone that was trying to help get caught up in that,” Portland-based Pastor Heather Hellman told KGW, referring to Renee Good, who was shot and killed in Minneapolis during an encounter with ICE agents.
“I can only imagine the terror. I’ve seen their violence in person, and so I understand why she didn’t get out of her car and why she was afraid and trying to get out of there.”
Minnesota Timberwolves hold moment of silence for Renee Nicole Good
A moment of silence was held for Renee Good ahead of the Minnesota Timberwolves’ game against the Cleveland Cavaliers at the Target Center in Minneapolis.
“As we all know, our community has suffered yet another unspeakable tragedy,” Timberwolves coach Chris Finch said before his team faced the Cavaliers, according to the Associated Press.
“We want to just convey our condolences and heartfelt wishes and prayers and thoughts to the families and loved ones and all of those that are greatly affected by what happened.”
Good, 37, died after an ICE agent opened fire at her car in Minneapolis yesterday.
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives assisting FBI in Portland shooting
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has agents responding to the Portland shooting investigation to assist the FBI, the agency said in a post on X.
The agency, also known as the ATF, will assist with crime gun intelligence, it said, but noted the FBI is the lead agency.
Some context: The ATF post’s specific focus on its role in “crime gun intelligence” suggests a firearm may have been recovered. The ATF has frequently been tapped by other law enforcement agencies to help trace the origin of firearms recovered during criminal investigations.
Portland police: Unclear if vehicle involved in shooting was weaponized

Police in Portland, Oregon, do not know if the vehicle involved in today’s shooting by federal agents was weaponized, Portland Police Bureau Chief Bob Day said during a press conference.
“We don’t have any information on that,” Day said, noting that the vehicle had left scene of the shooting before officials arrived.
“Six or seven minutes later, we responded to where the victims had called 911,” Day added. “We don’t have any first hand information.”
Here's what we've just learned about the shooting in Portland
In a news conference tonight, officials provided more details on the shooting incident in Portland, Oregon, that hospitalized a married couple.
Here’s what we learned:
Early in the investigation: Authorities don’t know if the shooting was an “immigration-related event” or “which federal agencies were involved,” according to Portland Police Chief Bob Day. He also said he doesn’t know the identities or the conditions of the two people who were shot. The police chief said officials “do not know the facts of this case,” but are offering support to federal agents who are conducting the investigation. Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin earlier in the day said in a statement that “US Border Patrol agents were conducting a targeted vehicle stop.”
Dispatch details: Law enforcement officers this afternoon learned through dispatch that “a man who had been shot was calling and requesting help,” Day said.
Calls for change: Portland Mayor Keith Wilson called on ICE to halt all operations in the city until today’s shooting is fully investigated. Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek called for a “full, completed” investigation into the incident rather than more detentions. And State Sen. Kayse Jama told ICE in the state to “get the hell out of our community.”
Emergency declaration on ICE: The Multnomah County Board of Commissioners voted earlier today to extend an emergency declaration in response to ICE activity as the agency has had a continuing presence in the area, County Chair Jessica Vega Pederson said.

Leave has been canceled for all Minneapolis officers due to rising tension, police chief says
The Minneapolis Police Department has canceled all leave for its officers due to concerns over another tragedy taking place following the ICE fatal shooting of a resident yesterday, Police Chief Brian O’Hara said tonight.
O’Hara said he has been adjusting policies and practices in the department due to the situation and has now canceled “all days off for all of our police officers, recalled everyone to duty.”
Officers have been attempting to field and triage all 911 calls related to federal immigration activity, O’Hara told CNN’s Anderson Cooper, adding:
The chief said that federal agents are also unfamiliar with the conditions of Minneapolis neighborhoods and are “not as prepared as city officers” for the situations they deal with every day.
Multnomah County board voted earlier today to extend emergency declaration on ICE enforcement, chair says
The Multnomah County Board of Commissioners voted earlier today to extend an emergency declaration in response to ICE activity as the agency has had a continuing presence in the area, County Chair Jessica Vega Pederson said.
“Multnomah County will not stand by as federal governments attack our neighbors,” she said.
It is crucial for the FBI, who is leading the investigation, to allow local law enforcement to participate, she said.
