Polo Sandoval is a CNN Anchor and Correspondent based in New York City. He anchors CNN Newsroom on CNN International and CNN Max during late-night hours for US viewers, early mornings in Europe, and afternoons for audiences in Asia.
A Texas-native, Sandoval spent his early childhood in northern Mexico. Prior to joining CNN International as an anchor in 2025, he developed a passion for connecting with people in the field, spending more than a decade traveling throughout the United States and Latin America, sharing his bilingual reporting on CNN, CNN International, CNN en Español, and over 1,100 news affiliates around the world.
As Correspondent for CNN, Sandoval covered an array of breaking news, including mass shootings, the COVID-19 pandemic, political protests, as well as occasional features show. Sandoval’s notable assignments include multiple deployments to the US-Mexico border where his distinctive reporting added nuance to the immigration debate. He covered the surge of New York City migrant arrivals in 2022, the Ferguson unrest of 2014, the riots in Baltimore in 2015, and the audacious escape of two convicted killers from a New York State prison that same year. During one of his deployments to Mexico, Sandoval also covered the latest jailbreak of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, as well as a subsequent New York trial that saw the drug lord sent to prison for the rest of his life.
Sandoval’s reporting extends well beyond immigration issues and notorious cartels, however. He has traveled multiple times to Havana to cover the state of US-Cuban relations, and the historic visit of Pope Francis in 2015. The following year, Sandoval reported from a notorious prison in Juarez, Mexico to preview an upcoming visit by Pope Francis there.
A self-described aviation and weather junkie, Sandoval has covered nearly every kind of natural disaster live from the impact zone. In 2022, he and his team spent Christmas in Buffalo, New York, reporting on a “once in a generation” deadly snowstorm. Additionally, in 2017, he covered one of the most active hurricane seasons on record, traveling to the hardest-hit regions of Texas and the Caribbean. There he spent months sharing the stories of survivors of hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria.
Prior to joining CNN in 2014, Sandoval’s passion for storytelling developed while working as a bureau chief at KRGV-TV, a local ABC affiliate in South Texas. His assignments there included severe weather, immigration, drug cartels, and the resulting violence on both sides of the border.
Sandoval graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Electronic Media from Texas State University. He lives in New York with his wife. An avid foodie, who spends his time-off exploring markets and restaurants in New York and around the world, Sandoval lives in his kitchen - experimenting with ingredients, and sharing his dishes with family, friends, and colleagues.
