One person has died and more than 20 were wounded after an Iranian missile hit near homes in Rishon Lezion, just south of Tel Aviv, Israel’s emergency services said.

A large number of paramedics were sent to the scene, where they found extensive damage and a number of people trapped under rubble.

“This is a difficult and complex scene and we are still continuing to scan and ensure that there are no additional victims inside the buildings,” said Rami Musher, deputy director of the Ayalon region’s emergency services.

A video from the Reuters news agency showed the damaged roof of a home and dozens of rescue workers and military personnel at the site.

A smoldering rocket came down on a highway in southern Israel near a CNN team that was watching live intercepts of Iranian aerial strikes in the early hours of Saturday.

“There were a lot of loud explosions and impacts, and you can see here, this missile right behind me lying in the road – it’s still smoking,” CNN’s Nic Robertson said from the scene. “This was from the latest salvo of the Iranian missiles intercepted.”

Iran has launched multiple strikes over Israel in recent hours, with Israeli military forces working to repel the assault and air raid sirens blaring across the country.

Explosions have been heard in the skies above Jerusalem as a new wave of Iranian missiles heads toward Israel.

“An additional barrage of missiles was launched toward the State of Israel,” the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement.

The IDF earlier warned of a new series of strikes and said its defenses were operating.

China condemned what it called Israel’s “violation of Iran’s sovereignty” and urged it to “stop all risky military actions,” its envoy to the United Nations has said.

Speaking at an emergency UN Security Council meeting Friday, Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the UN, said Beijing is “deeply concerned” about the consequences of Israel’s actions, stressing that an escalation in the region will not be in anyone’s interest.

“We urge Israel to immediately stop all risky military actions to avoid further escalation of tensions,” he added, urging all parties to use diplomacy.

He spoke after China’s Foreign Ministry said earlier in the day Beijing was “highly concerned” about the “grave consequences” that Israel’s attack on Iran may bring.

One woman has been killed and “some 40 people” injured by Iranian strikes in Israel, Israel’s ambassador to the United States said.

“We faced three salvos of ballistic missiles fired from Iran today, about 150 in total,” Yechiel Leiter told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins.

“We expect that the Iranians, who have a considerable volume of ballistic missiles, somewhere in the neighborhood of 2,000, will continue to fire them,” he said, while accusing Iran of targeting Israeli civilians.

He added that Israel wouldn’t know “precisely how much” damage it could inflict on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure until its forces “continue and complete the campaign.”

“Ask me that question in four or five days, and I’ll have a better assessment after our military assesses the damage they were able to implement to the various nuclear sites,” he said.

The Israel Defense Forces told residents of northern Israel they can now leave “protected spaces,” after air attack sirens sounded in the region.

Sirens have sounded in northern Israel after missile launches were detected, the Israel Defense Forces said.

It said it was operating to intercept the attacks and “strike where necessary to eliminate the threat.”

Iranian forces launched dozens of missiles toward Israel tonight, killing at least one person, as conflict between the two countries escalated. This comes after Iran said it would intensify its attacks on Israel and target the regional bases of any country that tries to defend it.

The Israeli military claimed that it intercepted some of the latest wave of missiles.

A woman was killed when a weapon fragment fell to the ground in the Israeli city of Ramat Gan, according to Israeli police, in the first reported fatality of the Iranian attacks.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene in the Dan area of the city, which is to the east of Tel Aviv, police said.

A number of injured people were evacuated from the area, a police spokesperson said, citing medical officials.

Police are still operating at the scene, along with other emergency services, according to the spokesperson.

A fire is burning at Tehran’s Mehrabad International Airport, according to two Iranian news outlets.

A video published by the state-affiliated Tasnim news agency shows smoke billowing into the air in the area of what it says is the airport.

Press TV is also reporting a fire at the airport.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

Iran will intensify its attacks on Israel and target the regional bases of any country that tries to defend it, a senior Iranian official told CNN on Friday.

Earlier Friday, US and Israeli sources told CNN the US military had helped to intercept Iranian missiles launched against Israel. One Israeli source told CNN other countries in the region had also supported Israeli air defenses.

Several explosions were heard in parts of the Iranian capital Tehran, Iranian state media outlets reported moments ago.

Footage showed two plumes of smoke rising over the city.

The cause of the explosions is not yet known.

The Israeli military says it struck two Iranian air force bases – used for missile and drone operations – on Friday.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it hit the Hamadan air base in western Iran and “dismantled” Iran’s Tabriz air base, a surface-to-surface missile launch site, in the northwest of the country.

The IDF said it also “struck and dismantled” dozens of Iran’s UAVs and surface-to-surface missile launchers in the attack.

Seven wounded people were taken to the Ichilov Medical Center in Tel Aviv after the latest wave of strikes in Israel, the hospital said.

It said most of the patients had “mild” injuries, one had “moderate.”

Separately, two members of Israel’s emergency service suffered minor injuries from glass fragments after a mobile intensive care unit was hit by shrapnel in the Tel Aviv area, the Magen David Adom service said.

They were treated at the scene and did not need to be taken to the hospital, MDA said.
