Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he will attend the funeral of slain New York City Police Officer Didarul Islam depending on what the family wants and what arrangements the family makes.

Cuomo has made public safety a central part of his mayoral campaign, along with proposals that include a plan to hire more police officers to tackle what he describes as a persistent crime problem. If elected, he said he would keep New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch in her role, as “she’s doing a very good job.”

“There’s been a lot of change in corruption in the police department here in New York City over the past few years, and she came into a very difficult situation,” he said.

During the interview, Cuomo was critical of Zohran Mamdani, who beat him in the Democratic primary. Cuomo, now running as an independent, said Mamdani does not understand the importance of policing and public safety.

A spokesperson for Mamdani ripped Cuomo in response.

“Multiple victims remain in the hospital, fighting for their lives. Our focus is on supporting those who’ve lost loved ones and bringing our communities together in the face of tragedy. This is a moment for compassion and solidarity — not cheap shots in the press,” spokesperson Zara Rahim said in a statement.

For those just now checking in, here’s what we know about the 4 people killed yesterday in Midtown Manhattan

Wesley LePatner, Aland Etienne, Didarul Islam and Julia Hyman

The four people who were killed yesterday in a Midtown Manhattan office building included a New York police officer, a “beloved” security guard, a young Cornell graduate and a senior executive with investment firm Blackstone.

Here’s what we know about the four victims:

Didarul Islam: The 36-year-old New York Police Department officer was a Bangladeshi immigrant hailed as a hero by city officials. He leaves behind two young sons and his wife, who is pregnant with their third child.

His death is the 50th law enforcement death this year, according to the Officer Down Memorial page.

Julia Hyman: The associate at Rudin Management, the real estate firm that owns the Park Avenue building, according to Cornell University, where she graduated from in 2020.

Hyman was a Manhattan native and studied hotel and restaurant administration in college, the university said.

Wesley LePatner: The Blackstone employee leaves behind a husband and children, the investment firm said. LePatner, who earned a bachelor’s degree from Yale University in 2003, worked as a senior managing director of real estate in New York, her Blackstone profile says.

“At this unbearably painful time, we are experiencing an enormous, gaping hole in our hearts that will never be filled, yet we will carry on the remarkable legacy Wesley created,” her family said.

Aland Etienne: The “dedicated security officer who took his job duties extremely seriously,” was killed in the shooting, his family said. “He was more than a brother – he was a father, a son, and a light in our lives,” Etienne’s brother, Gathmand Etienne, told CNN.

Rudin, the company that owns the Park Avenue building, described Etienne “a beloved lobby security guard.”

A large showing of New York City police officers lined the streets outside of Parkchester Jame Masjid mosque in the Bronx today to honor the officer killed in a shooting at a Manhattan office building where he was working as security.

The body of Didarul Islam, a Bangladeshi American police officer, was brought to the mosque, a day after the shooting.

Officers, both in uniform and in plain clothes, gathered around the building, anticipating his arrival. As the police procession escorting Islam’s body neared, they lined up along Virginia Avenue, stretching up and down the block.

Eventually, an ambulance carrying Islam’s body arrived in front of the mosque.

Blackstone staff remembered slain executive at company-wide meeting this morning, employee says

Blackstone, the investment firm that has an office in the Midtown Manhattan building where a gunman killed four people yesterday, including one of its executives, held a company-wide meeting today, an employee who was present told CNN.

Senior managing director at Blackstone, Wesley LePatner, was remembered by her family earlier today as a “loving wife, mother, daughter, sister and relative, who enriched our lives in every way imaginable.”

Stephen Schwarzman, the chairman, CEO and co-founder, and Jonathan Gray, the chief operating officer, spoke to employees during the 11 a.m. ET meeting, the employee said.

Gray read an introduction he previously wrote about LePatner for an awards ceremony, and both Gray and Schwarzman expressed that they are committed to the safety and support of their employees, the employee said.

They also offered counseling and said they will be increasing security at their offices around the world, the employee added.

The employee said leadership at the company “has been really supportive and has said some really meaningful things,” adding that “It’s nice to see strong, empathetic leaders in a world that is often lacking in them today.”

How private gun sales and transfers work in Nevada

The weapon that Shane Devon Tamura used an during yesterday’s mass shooting was assembled using a lower receiver purchased by an associate of his, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said today.

The lower receiver is the part of an AR-15 that is regulated by federal code, which requires a background check in Tamura’s home state of Nevada.

Here are some details about the gun laws in the state:

Private gun sales/transfer:

  • Since 2020, the private sale/transfer of firearms between two parties in Nevada still requires those individuals to go through a federally licensed dealer, who conducts a background check.
  • The law implemented in 2020 closed the so-called “gun show loophole” in Nevada.
  • There are limited exceptions to this for firearm transfers between family members, which do not require this process.
  • If Tamura obtained the lower receiver of his firearm from an associate in Nevada, and the transfer took place before the 2020 law was implemented, it was likely not illegal. The NYPD commissioner did not say when the transfer took place nor in what state it occurred.

Buying from a gun dealer: If you buy a gun from a licensed dealer, a background check is required. Exception: if you have a concealed carry permit and buy from a dealer, the background check is waived. The idea being the individual has already had a background check to get the concealed permit.

Data shows yesterday's Midtown Manhattan shooting was deadliest in years

Wesley LePatner, Aland Etienne, Didarul Islam and Julia Hyman

Four people were killed in Monday’s mass shooting in Manhattan, making it the deadliest event recorded in New York City since at least 2013, when Gun Violence Archive began tracking shooting incidents.

It was one of only two NYC shootings this year in which more than one victim was killed, according to GVA data. The other incident also occurred Monday, when two people were shot and killed at Ferry Point Park in the Bronx.

The city hit a record low number of shootings through May of this year, the NYPD announced in June.

Yesterday’s mass shooting was the only incident in which more than three victims were killed in the city, since GVA began tracking them. In that period, there have been nine shooting events in NYC where three people were killed, and in 61 cases, two people were killed.

CNN and GVA define a “mass shooting” as a shooting that injured or killed four or more people, not including the shooter.
