Marines will deployed in LA within 48 hours after completing training, US Northern Command says

US Marines are briefed by battalion leadership while rehearsing crowd control tactics at a base in the Los Angeles area, on Tuesday.

Activated United States Marines have completed their training and will be deployed to Los Angeles within the next 48 hours, according to a statement from US Northern Command Wednesday.

About 700 Marines have finished a “pre-deployment workup,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, approximately 2,000 National Guard troops are currently on active duty and helping ICE agents during demonstrations and an additional 2,000 Guard members will be ready for duty Thursday afternoon, according to Maj. Gen. Scott M. Sherman, who is leading the task force.

The deployment of the full Marine battalion marks a significant escalation in Trump’s use of the military as a show of force against protesters.

The role of the Marines and National Guard in the Los Angeles area is “still not clear” as immigration protests continue for a sixth day, Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell said earlier Wednesday.

Trump’s military “political stunt” threatens California’s wildfire response, Newsom says

A view of the rebuilding effort after January's Palisades fire in Los Angeles, seen on June 3.

The ability of state authorities to respond to wildfires could be hindered by President Donald Trump’s federalization of National Guard troops, according to California Governor Gavin Newsom.

Newsom said in a Wednesday social media post that state officials were currently battling a wildfire in San Bernardino, about 60 miles east of Los Angeles, that has grown to 4,000 acres.

Some background: Specially trained teams from the California National Guard can be called in to assist first responders with fire suppression capabilities.

Four thousand state National Guard troops have been federalized by Trump following protests in the LA area.

Public divided over LA protests and Trump's reaction to them, Washington Post/Schar School poll finds

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, on Wednesday night.

The American public splits about evenly over President Donald Trump’s choice to send the National Guard and Marines to respond to the protests in Los Angeles, according to a new one-day survey from the Washington Post and George Mason University’s Schar School conducted on Tuesday.

Overall, 44% oppose Trump’s choice to send in the National Guard and Marines, 41% support it and 15% say they are unsure how they feel about it.

Republicans in the survey are more likely to support Trump’s action (86%) than Democrats are to oppose it (76%), but political independents break toward opposing this choice (48% oppose, 33% support and 19% are unsure).

The survey also finds near even splits over views of the protests themselves, with 39% supporting protests in LA “against the federal government’s immigration enforcement,” and 40% opposing those protests, with 21% unsure. Americans also split over whether these protests have been mostly peaceful (35%) or mostly violent (37%) with an even larger share unsure on that question.

Polls conducted in one day can be subject to larger potential errors than those fielded over multiple days, since not everyone selected to participate may be available to respond on that single day. The survey was conducted by text message among 1,015 members of the SSRS Opinion Panel on Tuesday, June 10. Results for the full sample have a margin of sampling error of plus or or minus 3.4 percentage points.

The mayor of Spokane, Washington, has declared a state of emergency and announced a curfew in certain areas, which will take effect roughly half an hour from now.

The curfew will last from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. local time, according to the declaration by Mayor Lisa Brown.

Everyone must abide by the curfew, with limited exceptions for emergency personnel, media, residents living in the area, people going to and from work, and those leaving a nearby soccer game, the declaration said.

Large groups of protesters took to the city’s streets on Wednesday afternoon, carrying signs and blocking roads, according to video from CNN affiliate KHQ. They were demonstrating outside an ICE facility against raids and potential deportations.

In this screengrab taken from a video, police work to disperse a crowd of protesters in Spokane, Washington, on Wednesday.

Ahead of the curfew, police donned gas masks and deployed a device that released smoke into the crowd, according to KHQ’s video. It was not immediately clear exactly which device the officers were using.

Protesters then scattered from the road, lining the sidewalks and shouting at officers. Some detained protesters could be seen sitting on the sidewalk with their hands zip-tied behind their backs. SWAT units were also seen on the scene, according to KHQ.

The city’s police department declared an unlawful assembly and issued warnings that force would be used if protesters did not disperse.

Police chiefs in other major cities will be closely watching how Los Angeles responds to protests

Former Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo, whose tenure included handling the aftermath of George Floyd’s killing in 2020, said police chiefs in major cities will be closely watching how law enforcement in Los Angeles is responding to the protests.

Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell’s handling of the protests is “unprecedented” due to the the deployment of the federalized National Guard and Marines, Arrandondo said. He led the Minneapolis Police Department between 2017 and 2022.

He added that chiefs in other cities will likely be speaking to each other about what their own response will look like and how they can build relationships with organizers, union leaders and activists to “work together.”

Protests against immigration raids by the Trump administration have already popped up in other major US cities, including New York, Chicago, Austin and Washington.

CNN witnesses detentions in Downtown LA ahead of curfew

Protesters are loaded onto Los Angeles Police Department buses on Wednesday.

CNN crews on the ground in Downtown Los Angeles witnessed police detaining protesters ahead of curfew on Wednesday night.

Police had declared an unlawful assembly outside City Hall about an hour before the curfew came into effect at 8 p.m. Pacific Time. After the declaration, CNN saw officers using rubber bullets to disperse the crowd, and police on horseback moving in to clear demonstrators.

CNN Correspondent Nick Watt reported seeing 20 to 30 people being taken into custody ahead of curfew. CNN reached out to the LAPD for details.

Video shot by CNN shows people being escorted away by police with their hands zip-tied behind their backs.

The number of arrests by LAPD has jumped each day since anti-ICE protests began in the city on Friday. Similar protests have since spread to other cities.

Downtown LA curfew goes into effect for second night

A curfew has come into effect in parts of downtown Los Angeles for the second night in a row, lasting from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Pacific Time.

Ramps onto and off of the 101 freeway in the area will also continue to be closed, police said.

The curfew aims to “stop bad actors who are taking advantage of the President’s chaotic escalation,” LA Mayor Karen Bass wrote in a post on X.

“If you do not live or work in Downtown L.A., avoid the area and follow guidance from law enforcement. Vandalism and violence will not be tolerated,” she wrote.

The role of Marines and National Guard is "still not clear," LAPD chief says

Maj. Gen. Scott Sherman, head of Task Force 51, which is overseeing the deployment of National Guard and Marines to Los Angeles, speaks to reporters on Wednesday, June 11, 2025

The role of the US Marines and National Guard in the Los Angeles area is “still not clear” as immigration protests continue for a sixth day, Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell said Wednesday.

“This is unprecedented,” he continued. “As far as the scope of their responsibilities or their abilities relative to arrest or dealing in a municipal environment, that’s not something that they do every day certainly. What their training is, we’re not sure of that – either on the army or the Marines as it relates to crowd management, crowd control in an urban environment.”

The police chief said he will seek some clarity on their roles and responsibilities by speaking with Maj. Gen. Scott Sherman, head of Task Force 51, which is overseeing the deployment of National Guard and Marines to Los Angeles.

Asked about President Donald Trump’s decision to bring in the National Guard on Saturday, McDonnell said the protests are “nowhere near” a level of unrest requiring the National Guard. The protocol is to use internal resources, mobilize the police department and request mutual aid from law enforcement partners throughout Southern California before calling in the National Guard, he said.

Police are more wary at night of “black bloc type protesters, anarchists” who “come prepared,” the police chief said. “They’re very sophisticated. They do have radio communications. They do move around. They do monitor police channels, and they’ll create distractions that in order to draw us away from the scene we’re about to make arrests.”

Bill Clinton criticizes Trump's decision to federalize the National Guard in Los Angeles

Former President Bill Clinton criticized the Trump administration’s decision to federalize the National Guard in response to the protests in Los Angeles, during remarks at his book tour event in New York.

“President Trump inserted himself into it so he could badmouth California,” Clinton told the audience on Wednesday.

Last week, President Donald Trump ordered the deployment of National Guard troops to quell immigration protests in Los Angeles, overriding California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s objections in a rare move.

Newsom slammed Trump, saying Tuesday that, “Democracy is under assault before our eyes, this moment we have feared has arrived.”

Los Angeles arrests included “anarchists, if you will,” says LAPD chief

A Los Angeles police officers clear a street near Los Angeles City Hall in downtown Los Angeles on Monday.

Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell described some of those arrested by his department in light of the protests surrounding the area as organized groups of ‘Black Bloc’-type protesters — an apparent reference to a demonstration tactic that involves dressing in all-black and concealing one’s face with a ski mask or balaclava in an effort to become unidentifiable to authorities.

“They come prepared, and they’re very sophisticated,” McDonnell told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins after having referred to these groups as “anarchists, if you will.”

McDonnell also confirmed that some of the weaponry found with these individuals included hammers used to break up concrete to throw at law enforcement, along with shrapnel-embedded commercial-grade fireworks.

Approximately 400 people have been arrested by the LAPD on the heels of the anti-ICE protests around the city, which have spread to other big cities. Despite this, McDonnell maintained that the majority of protests that have been taking place across the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area have been peaceful, particularly during daytime.

Parts of Los Angeles remain under curfew between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. PST.

Police declare unlawful assembly outside Los Angeles City Hall

A man shouts into a megaphone outside City Hall during a protest in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

Police declared an unlawful assembly outside Los Angeles City Hall this evening, and a CNN crew on the ground saw officers using rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.

There were people in the crowd “throwing commercial grade fireworks and rocks at officers” as protesters marched through downtown Los Angeles to the steps of City Hall, the Los Angeles Police Department’s Central Division said on X earlier in the day.

LAPD officers on horses were seen moving in on protesters shortly after the unlawful assembly was declared.

While most of the protesters moved into Grand Park, a few dozen protesters remained in front of City Hall, chanting “peaceful protest.”

The unlawful assembly declaration comes before a curfew is set to begin for a swath of downtown LA from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. PT.
