Half Moon Bay shooting was San Mateo County's highest death toll ever from single homicide incident, DA says

A San Mateo County sheriff's deputy blocks the entrance to one of the murder scenes on Jan. 24.

The mass shooting in Half Moon Bay was the first time seven murders happened in one incident in the history of San Mateo County, the county’s district attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.

He said the previous incident with the highest number of people murdered at one time in San Mateo County included four people.

Chunli Zhao, 66, is accused of shooting eight people at two locations in Half Moon Bay. According to Wagstaffe, Zhao’s gun was a Ruger semiautomatic firearm. Search warrants have been executed but are currently under seal, Wagstaffe said.

Zhao is facing seven counts of murder and one count of attempted murder for his alleged role in the massacre. There are no plans at this time to add any additional charges to the indictment as prosecutors have charged Zhao to the fullest extent of the law, Wagstaffe said.

Suspect gave a statement during questioning, district attorney says

Chunli Zhao, who allegedly shot eight people in Half Moon Bay Monday, gave a statement to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s office after being taken into custody, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said Wednesday.

The interview was conducted through a translator who speaks Mandarin, and an attorney was not present because Zhao did not request one, Wagstaffe said.

Zhao is a Chinese citizen, and while he previously had proper documentation to be in the country, it is not immediately clear what his current immigration status is, Wagstaffe said.

The sheriff’s office is currently looking to see if Zhao has any other criminal history, and acknowledged there is an incident in another county that it is looking into, Wagstaffe said.

Half Moon Bay mass shooting was not a Monterey Park copycat incident, district attorney says

Prosecutors do not believe the suspect in the Half Moon Bay shooting was trying to copy the Monterey Park mass shooting that happened less than 48 hours earlier, according to San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.

Eleven people died and nine others were wounded in the shooting at a dance studio in Monterey Park, in the Los Angeles area, on Saturday night.

Wagstaffe said officials do know if the suspect, Chunli Zhao, targeted his victims but refused to share the answer at this time.

The district attorney’s office will now oversee all communications regarding the case and will do so on a limited basis as there is a concern about the level of publicity the case is getting, he said.

Alleged Half Moon Bay shooter could face life without parole or death penalty if convicted, DA says

Chunli Zhao, 66, made his first courtroom appearance Wednesday. He did not enter a plea, but Wagstaffe said he expects that he will plead not guilty “and the system will go forward.”

According to Wagstaffe, Zhao is not a US citizen but had been in the country for at least a decade.

Arraignment of suspect in Half Moon Bay mass shooting postponed until Feb. 16

Chunli Zhao appears for his arraignment at the San Mateo Criminal Court in Redwood City, California, on January 25.

Chunli Zhao, the 66-year-old man accused of killing seven people and injuring one in Half Moon Bay, California, is expected to be arraigned on Feb. 16 after a California judge approved a defense attorney’s request to postpone Wednesday’s hearing.

Zhao, who appeared before the court behind glass in an area sectioned off for inmates, covered his face with a yellow sheet of paper when he first entered the courtroom. His hands were shaking and shackled.

A Mandarin language translator was used to deliver communications between the court and Zhao.

It was ruled in court that Zhao will be held in custody without bail.

Note was left in the car used by the Half Moon Bay suspect, district attorney says

A note was left in the car used by the Half Moon Bay suspect, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said Wednesday after his first courtroom appearance.

Officials “do have a feeling on the motive based on what he has told us,” he said.

Wagstaffe was asked if there was a note in the car. He confirmed there was, but refused to elaborate.

Chunli Zhao is charged with seven counts of murder, one count of attempted murder and is being held in custody until his arraignment on Feb. 16. The murder counts all include enhancements for the use of a firearm, great bodily injury and multiple murder.

Wagstaffe said Zhao was “cooperative” in his interview with the sheriff’s detectives

California lawmakers vow to push for gun laws following back-to-back shootings

California assemblymember Marc Berman speaks to the media in Half Moon Bay on Tuesday, January 24.

Three of California’s State Assembly members who represent San Mateo County said they would keep pushing for laws that will reduce gun violence incidents like those that happened in Half Moon Bay and Monterey Park over the past few days.

The Half Moon Bay community’s sense of peace “was destroyed by senseless death,” Assemblymember Marc Berman said, noting that there are workplace disagreements and relationship disagreements happen all over the world.

“But it’s only in the United States where far too often those disagreements end in mass shootings,” he said, promising that the state will do everything possible to further reduce such incidents.

Some context: California already has the strongest gun laws in the country, according to the advocacy groups Everytown for Gun Safety and The Giffords Law Center.

The semi-automatic handgun believed to have been used by the Half Moon Bay suspect was legally purchased and owned, authorities said. The origin of the weapons used by the suspect in Monterey Park is being investigated by authorities.

Suspect in Half Moon Bay mass shooting lived at one of the locations where people were killed, company says

A farm where several people were found shot dead is seen in Half Moon Bay, California, on January 24.

The gunman in a shooting that left a total of seven people dead over two locations in Half Moon Bay, California, lived at the property where four of the victims were killed, according to a company spokesperson.

The site, formerly known as Mountain Mushroom Farm, was acquired by a company called California Terra Garden in March 2022, spokesperson David Oates, told CNN.

There are three mobile homes and six trailers for employees on the property, and the suspected gunman, Chunli Zhao, lived there since at least then, the spokesperson said.

Zhao started working at the farm prior to Terra Garden acquiring it, and was one of about 35 employees, according to Oates.

The farm grows mushrooms and “other food-grade herbs like basil, oregano, those kind of things … predominantly mushrooms sold on the retail and wholesale side,” Oates said.

The owners of the farm are bringing in grief counselors for all the employees, Oates said. “Their goal right now is to try to bring everybody together to start a long healing process. They look at team members more like family,” he said.

FBI officials walk towards the crime scene at the mushroom farm in Half Moon Bay, California, on Tuesday.

The San Mateo County victims were either Asian or Hispanic, Corpus said.

The killings mark California’s second massacre in three days involving Asian American victims and suspects.

Here’s what we know about the deadly shooting:

  • The victims: Seven people were killed and one was injured in the shootings in Half Moon Bay. The only known connection between the victims and the suspect is that some may have been coworkers, Corpus said at a news conference Tuesday. Five men and two women were killed while a surviving male was taken to the hospital and is out of surgery and stable. The victims were either Asian or Hispanic, they said.
  • The suspect: Zhao was an employee of the mushroom farm, where four people were killed Monday, Corpus said. “All of the evidence we have points to this being the instance of workplace violence,” the sheriff said.
  • The investigation: The suspect will be arraigned Wednesday, according to San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe. The charges have not yet been determined and that decision will be made later Tuesday or Wednesday morning. Wagstaffe noted that “obviously” the charges will involve the homicides that took place. The semi-automatic handgun was legally purchased and owned, authorities said. A motive is still being investigated.
  • Community response: The Half Moon Bay killings mark California’s second massacre in three days involving Asian American victims and suspects. And state-wide, 19 people were slaughtered in three mass shootings in just 44 hours: 11 people were killed after a gunman opened fire at a dance studio in Monterey Park, near Los Angeles; seven people were killed in the Half Moon Bay area and one person was killed and seven others wounded Monday evening in OaklandStop AAPI Hate released the following statement in response to the mass shootings in Half Moon Bay and Monterey Park: “There is no way to describe the overwhelming loss of life that has taken place over the past few days, and its impact on the Asian American community, the Latino community, the farmworker community and the communities of Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay.
