Steven Jiang is the Beijing Bureau Chief for CNN International, responsible for overseeing the network’s coverage of China and its operations in the country. Prior to this appointment, he was CNN’s China-based Senior Producer.
An award-winning bilingual journalist for more than two decades, Jiang plays an integral role in CNN’s news coverage across TV and digital platforms. Most recently he spearheaded CNN’s coverage of the Covid-19 outbreak in China and the network’s ongoing Xinjiang investigations, providing critical assessments on both editorial and operational matters.
He has also covered Japan’s worst nuclear crisis in history, the Arab Spring unrest in the Middle East, the missing Malaysian airliner and South Korea’s sunken passenger ferry.
Jiang started his career at CNN’s global headquarters in Atlanta in 1999. After nearly six years, he left to work for CBS News, NBC News, and Channel NewsAsia before returning to CNN in 2010.
Jiang has been recognized for his outstanding work multiple times. His reporting has earned him three Emmy nominations: in 2021 he was part of the CNN team nominated for their exceptional Covid-19 coverage, and in 2022 and 2020 he was part of the team nominated for their investigative reporting into Xinjiang. In 2020 he also won an award for Excellence in Arts and Culture Reporting from the Society of Publishers in Asia, and in 2011 was part of the team that won a prestigious Peabody Award for the Arab Spring coverage.
Jiang graduated with honors from Northwestern University with majors in journalism and international studies.
