Nectar Gan is a Senior News Desk Reporter, China, for CNN International based in Hong Kong. She writes about Chinese politics, society and foreign policy, and is a founding writer of CNN’s Meanwhile in China newsletter.
Since joining CNN in 2020, Gan has reported on major events shaping China and its relations with the rest of the world, including the Covid-19 pandemic, the ruling Communist Party’s tightening grip across all aspects of society, and the country’s expanding global ambitions under leader Xi Jinping. She has also written extensively on Chinese society, culture and trends, documenting the changes sweeping China and its people, especially the younger generation.
She has traveled to mainland China to cover the Beijing Winter Olympics and Beijing’s renewed panda diplomacy with the United States.
Prior to CNN, Gan was a senior China reporter at the South China Morning Post, where she covered a wide range of topics, from politics and human rights to environmental issues.
Gan graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and has been based in the city since 2010.
