Michelle Shen is a breaking news writer on the Politics team at CNN, where she writes articles and contributes to the live coverage of the most significant political stories of the day.

She worked in finance before starting her journalism career as a local news reporter in North Carolina. While there she covered the impact of COVID-19 on local industries such as manufacturing and tourism, with many of her stories appearing on USA TODAY. She then moved to Washington D.C. to cover House races during the 2022 midterm elections, where she delivered scoops on fundraising and ad buys and wrote deep dives on topics such as crypto lobbying and mental health among members of Congress. She also covered major political events on Capitol Hill, such as Kevin McCarthy’s ascension to the speakership and President Joe Biden’s State of the Union speeches.

Michelle is a member of the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA). She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Computer Science.
