John Liu is News Desk Reporter, Business, for CNN International based at the network’s Asia-Pacific headquarters in Hong Kong where he writes business stories about the region, focusing on technology, economy, consumer brands and beyond.

Before joining CNN in 2025, Liu was a reporter and researcher at The New York Times, where he covered the Asian tech industry, from semiconductor supply chains to China’s AI development.

Previously, Liu worked as a freelance journalist covering Taiwan and Myanmar, including Myanmar’s 2021 military coup, for various international media outlets. He started his career as a reporter at the now defunct Myanmar Times in Yangon.

Liu’s work has been recognized by The Society of Publishers in Asia. In 2023, he was part of a team awarded Excellence in Technology Reporting for a months-long investigation into the technology-enabled Chinese surveillance state.

A native of Taipei, Taiwan, he is a graduate of the University of Hong Kong. He speaks English and Mandarin.
