Irene Nasser is an award-winning journalist based at the network’s Asia-Pacific headquarters in Hong Kong. She manages the International Desk where she works leading multi-platform visual storytelling, including both breaking news and features stories across platforms, from TV to digital video.

While at CNN, Irene’s work has included covering the war in Gaza and the expanding conflict in the Middle East, US-China relations, India-Pakistan tensions, the 2022 Iran protests, Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s assassination, and COVID in China among money other stories.

Nasser joined CNN from Al Jazeera English, where she was based at its global headquarters in Doha. There she was responsible for overseeing teams in the field, breaking news, and managing planning coverage. She also worked as an on-ground coordinator during major news events and as a fill-in correspondent.

Nasser has over fifteen years of experiences in journalism, media and documentary making, working extensively across the Middle East while being based in Jerusalem for several years. While there, Nasser worked across the region and covered the 2014 Gaza war, the Syrian uprising and rise of ISIL, as well as the refugee crisis across the Balkan region. She has worked for several other major news outlets including the UK’s Channel 4 News, VICE, the New York Times and the Washington Post.

In addition to an Emmy Award for breaking news coverage, Nasser has won a Peabody Award for the short film ‘My Neighbourhood’. She has a Master’s Degree in International Relations from American University in Washington DC and is a 2017 Ochberg Fellow at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
