AT&T offers iPhone 12 deal to grow 5G adoption

Mobile carriers are eager to get more customers on their 5G networks, although they’re still in the process of building out 5G infrastructure.

AT&T (T) is offering a deal for customers who want the new 5G iPhone 12. Customers can get the iPhone 12 for $0 down, when they buy it on an AT&T installment plan, subscribe to an Unlimited data plan and trade in a working iPhone 8 or higher. The offer doesn’t apply to the 12 Pro or 12 Pro Max. (CNN parent company WarnerMedia is owned by AT&T.)

The company hopes the deal will encourage customers to upgrade despite the “challenging year,” CEO Jeff McElfresh said in a statement. Consumers have in recent years been going longer between device upgrades, and this year could be particularly challenging for smartphone sales because of the pandemic and economic downturn.

AT&T’s superfast, “wideband” 5G network is available in parts of 35 US cities. Its “low-band” network, which is faster than 4G but not nearly as speedy as “wideband” 5G, is available to more than 200 million people nationwide.

Lidar is not just for self-driving cars anymore

Apple said Tuesday that the iPhone 12 Pro will come with a lidar scanner, which uses laser pulses to measure distances between objects.

The technology, which is known for helping self-driving cars navigate, can be used to build depth maps of different scenes and Apple plans to employ it for several applications. The company said it will help with placing augmented-reality objects more precisely on surfaces, and for quickly autofocusing the phone’s camera to capture low-light scenes in photos and videos.

How much each iPhone costs

The iPhone 12 Pro starts at $999, while the Pro Max costs $1099. The iPhone mini starts at $699, while iPhone 12 comes in at $799.

Older models are cheaper, too. The iPhone 11 costs $599, while the iPhone XR is $499. The budget iPhone SE is $399.

The iPhone 12 and 12 Pro will be available for pre-order on Oct. 16 and in stores on Oct. 23. The iPhone 12 mini and 12 Pro Max will be available for pre-order on Nov. 6 and in stores Nov. 13.

Apple and Google offer alternatives to super-expensive phones

Apple’s latest devices are good news for anyone not looking to shell out $1,000 for a new phone.

The iPhone 12 mini starts at $699, while the iPhone 12 starts at $799. That’s downright affordable compared to other smartphones on the market that cost as much as $2,000.

Apple isn’t alone in targeting a more cost-conscious user. Google’s Pixel 5 starts at $699 and the Pixel 4a 5G starts at $499. Meanwhile, the Pixel 4a that launched earlier this year costs $399.

The relatively low price point of these devices could provide a more affordable entry point to the 5G ecosystem as well as other more advanced technologies.

Apple tries to make the iPhone less wasteful

Apple will ship the iPhone 12 without headphones or a charging brick, a move aimed at cutting down on waste.

More than 2 billion Apple power adapters are out in the world, and many customers already have wired headphones or AirPods, vice president of environment, policy and social initiatives Lisa Jackson said.

“Removing these items also means a smaller, lighter iPhone box,” Jackson said. “We can fit up to 70% more items on a shipping pallet,” reducing shipping emissions.

The new iPhone also uses 100% recycled rare earth elements for all magnets, including in the camera and haptics.

The changes will cut out 2 million metric tons of carbon emissions created by iPhone production and shipping annually, Jackson said. By 2030, Apple plans to have net zero climate impact across its entire business, including its manufacturing supply chain and all devices.

iPhone 12 Pro & Pro Max are all about the camera

iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max boast a better camera and larger screen.

The high-end models come in four colors: silver, black, gold and blue. The Pro version has a 6.1 inch display and the Pro Max has a 6.7 inch display, both of which are larger screens than their predecessors.

As with many flagship phones, a big focal point is the camera – it has a wider camera, better optical zoom range, and its lens lets in 27% more light. It features image stabilization for shaky hands or a bumpy car ride.

iPhone 12, but make it mini

With dramatic James Bond music playing in the background, Apple opened a metal briefcase to reveal the iPhone 12 mini.

It has the same features as the iPhone 12, including 5G, a dual camera system, and the phone-protecting ceramic shield material. But it’s smaller and lighter than the larger version, and features a 5.4 inch display.

iPhone Mini starts at $699, while iPhone 12 starts at $799.

Apple's latest technology: Magnets

Apple is adding a magnet to the back of the iPhone 12 to make it line up better with wireless chargers, for more efficient charging. This also enables certain accessories to snap on to the back of it, like a slim wallet the company showed off, and will allow wireless charging to work through some accessories.

'League of Legends' got a cameo in today's Apple event

Apple specifically chose to highlight the forthcoming “League of Legends: Wild Rift” to showcase the iPhone 12’s gaming capabilities. “League,” the wildly popular online multiplayer game, has been a PC-only game for over ten years, and later this year it’s finally coming to mobile, to both iOS and Android, reaching a whole new audience of over a billion users.

Putting the spotlight on “Wild Rift” is an interesting choice considering Apple might have promoted its Apple Arcade subscription service, which offers a curated collection of mostly indie game titles. Today, Apple chose instead to focus on an unreleased title that so far hasn’t been announced for Apple Arcade at all. It didn’t choose one of its current successes such as the extremely lucrative “Genshin Impact” or a long-term moneymaker like “Pokémon Go.”

And it certainly didn’t choose “Fortnite,” which is currently not available in the App Store due to an ongoing legal battle between Apple and “Fortnite” creator Epic Games.

Last week a judge ruled last week that “Fortnite” would stay off of Apple’s phones while the companies battle over the lawsuit.

Apple makes big claims about its 14 Bionic chip

Apple claims the iPhone 12’s new A14 bionic is the fastest processor ever in a smartphone.

Here are some of the highlights from Apple’s presentation:

  • A 6-core CPU, faster than any smartphone chip, Apple says.
  • A 4-core GPU, which is better for machine learning and advanced games. And fastest GPU in any smartphone, delivering faster graphics, Apple says.
  • Apple says it has has dramatically increased the performance of the neural engine from 8 to 16 cores, which should dramatically speed up its ability to process AI-related operations.

The new iPhone 12 may be a blast from the past

The new iPhone 12 was just announced by Apple. It’s getting five colorful options: black, white, red, green and blue. The red is branded Apple’s (PRODUCT)Red, which donates proceeds to fighting HIV and AIDS.

The phone is also thinner and smaller than the iPhone 11, meaning fans of Apple products who have been asking for smaller phones are finally getting what they want.

The smaller design and noticeably flatter edges recall earlier iPhone models like the iPhone 4.

Verizon lights up 'nationwide' 5G for the iPhone 12

Verizon (VZ) is touting its 5G network following the announcement of the first 5G iPhones.

Verizon on Tuesday announced the launch of its “nationwide” 5G network, which covers more than 200 million people in 1,800 cities across the country. Competitors AT&T and T-Mobile previously announced nationwide 5G networks. These networks are built using lower frequency spectrum bands, meaning signals travel farther but provide only a relatively small jump in speeds compared to 4G.

Verizon also announced its superfast, “wide band” 5G network is now available in 55 cities, 43 stadiums and arenas and seven airports. This network will allow for dramatically faster uploads and downloads, improved live gaming and other perks.

Mobile providers are counting on the 5G iPhone to help increase adoption of the new wireless network technology.

Meet the iPhone 12 with 5G

The iPhone 12 has two cameras, and it features smooth, flat edges, so the phone is flush in the front and back. It’s thinner, smaller and lighter than the iPhone 11, and has double the pixels.

iPhone 12 comes in black, white, red, green and blue.

It also features an upgraded XDR display and a new, tougher screen material that Apple is calling “Ceramic Shield.” Apple says that makes its glass more durable, and it had four times better drop performance.

5G is officially coming to the iPhone

It’s official: 5G is coming to the iPhone

Apple CEO Tim Cook announced that the “next generation” of the iPhone is here. He called it a “huge moment for all of us.” The new iPhone will bring a “new level of performance” for downloads and uploads and higher-quality video streaming. In highly populated areas where 5G is available, people will have better service and faster speeds.

5G capability will be built into all the new iPhones introduced today, Cook said.

In Apple fashion, they also nodded to the privacy benefits. With better service, people won’t need to connect to sketchy, public WiFi hotspots as often.

A mini HomePod

First up is the HomePod mini, the latest smart speaker from Apple. It has a new spherical shape with mesh fabric – a very similar look to the new Echo speakers Amazon announced last month. It illuminates different colors at the top when Siri is activated.

The company said it has improved sound, and multiple HomePod mini speakers can play in sync throughout the home. If you have two of them in the same room, they will “intelligently: become a “stereo pair.”

It comes in white and space gray. HomePod Mini ($99) will be available for order starting November 6 and it will start shipping the week of November 16.

Apple also highlighted the improvements it’s made to Siri, possibly as a way of deflecting criticism that it lags behind rival voice assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant. For example, Siri can recognize other people’s voices in the home, and can now act as an intercom system within the home to alert people in a different room.

How to watch today's event

You can tune into today’s Apple event by going to Apple.com or YouTube.

On YouTube, more than 750,000 people were watching as of 1 pm ET.

One thing the iPhone 12 may not have...

While today’s event is likely to be all about the features and perks iPhone 12 buyers will get, one thing they may not get is a charging block.

Since most iPhone owners already have the block that plugs into the wall, several Wall Street analysts said they think Apple may ship the new iPhone with only a charging cord. It could be an environmentally friendly move — cutting down on the materials needed to make all those new charging blocks and allowing for smaller packaging.

It would also save Apple a few dollars per iPhone. That could boost the company’s margins on what are likely to be 5G-connected devices, which generally cost more to make.

Opinion: The iPhone is for people who drive Toyota Camrys

In many ways, the iPhone is like a Toyota (TM) Camry, a machine that offers familiarity and reliability over fun, productivity, speed, performance, innovation and futuristic features.

That’s not a bad thing. The Camry is a good car, and Toyota sells boatloads of them every year to people who just want to get from point A to point B, without having to worry about what this button does or what driving mode they should switch to or whether their car is going to melt down while they’re stuck in rush hour traffic.

The iPhone 12 will be no different. It will probably have some snazzier features – perhaps better cameras, 5G connectivity and a high-refresh-rate screen. Even with a light redesign, some different colors and a snappier processor, it’s still going to have that familiar iPhone look and feel, complete with the same iOS software experience we’ve grown accustomed to for 13 years.

But there’s more to a phone than playing it safe.

Mini apps could reinvent the way you use your iPhone

Apple has a solution for home screen clutter: Mini apps.

Instead of downloading an app, you can pull up just one part of it, saving valuable space on your phone.

Last month, the iPhone maker debuted “App Clips” as part of its latest operating system update. The new iOS 14, which has already rolled out on many current Apple (AAPL)  devices, will almost certainly be featured on a slate of new phones the company is revealing today.

For some, the concept may sound familiar: In China, the ubiquitous app WeChat has offered something similar for years.

More than 400 million users rely on WeChat’s one million mini programs daily to do virtually everything, from ordering groceries to booking a yoga class to paying bills, without leaving the app. Like App Clips, mini programs don’t take up a lot of space, so they can load quickly and minimize the storage needed on a phone.

What’s the appeal? The main problem these smaller programs address is that most users no longer want to install new apps.

Seem familiar? This is not the first time that Silicon Valley has taken cues from China, said Pocket Sun, founding partner of SoGal Ventures, a venture capital firm that invests in startups in the United States and Asia.

Apple, for example, integrated its Apple Pay feature into iMessage well after WeChat popularized the use of digital payments on its messaging app, she said.

Why a fancy new iPhone will be a tougher sell than ever

It’s a nightmare product-release scenario, even for Apple: A raging pandemic has infected millions, including the President, and forced millions of Americans out of work. A reckoning with racial injustice has swept across the country. And in the company’s home state of California, record-breaking wildfires blaze.

That’s the backdrop as the world’s most valuable public company prepares to unveil its latest iPhones.

The last time Apple released a phone into so much economic uncertainty was the iPhone 3G in July 2008, when the United States was already in a recession and just before the financial crisis escalated with the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers.

Now, Covid has cast a shadow over all aspects of life in 2020, including smartphone upgrade cycles, and not even Apple is immune. The company typically announces new iPhones in September, but this year the pandemic disrupted supply chains and so it previously announced that the smartphones would ship out later than usual.

When the newest iPhones arrive, they’ll be released in a vastly different economic and social environment than those in the past. An unknown number of people who just months ago planned to upgrade this fall to the latest and greatest iPhone now find that unthinkable due to Covid-related job losses and similar financial fears. Apple has been moving into luxury territory for years and, for many, a flagship device is now downright decadent.

And even for consumers who can afford it, it may be hard to justify the expense of a handset that may top $1,100.
