The latest

• About 150 million people across the eastern half of the US are under heat alerts — nearly one in two Americans. The heat wave will be especially intense in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.

• The heat waves have been triggered by intense heat domes — stubborn areas of high pressure that lock hot air in place — and are clearly supercharged by global warming, experts say.

• Cities in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic are responding to the extreme heat by opening or extending cooling centers, pools, libraries, spray parks and other public spaces. Several are also increasing outreach to vulnerable groups, including people experiencing homelessness, older residents and outdoor workers.
