A law enforcement operation took place near Guthrie's home tonight. What happened?
Law enforcement vehicles were seen late Friday at a location two miles from Nancy Guthrie’s home for an operation that authorities said was related to the investigation into her disappearance.
Roads have since reopened and law enforcement vehicles have left the site, according to a CNN producer. Here’s a look at what happened:

Retired FBI agent said reaction signifies police believe they have "pretty good lead"

Overnight police activity at a home less than two miles from Nancy Guthrie’s home suggests investigators are pursuing “a pretty good lead,” according to retired FBI special agent and CNN law enforcement contributor Steve Moore.
The operation, Moore told CNN’s Elex Michaelson, appeared to be “investigation-driven rather than reactive,” a possible indication law enforement had obtained information that they believe is important, Moore added.
“When you get a line of 20 federal cars, plus all the equipment trucks, this was a preplanned operation,” Moore said.
Based on his experience, he said investigators think the information “is important enough to get a warrant for, to get people’s hopes up for, to expend lots of manpower and emotional energy on. They must believe it’s a pretty good lead.”
What appears to be federal vehicles arrive at the scene
More vehicles, some believed to be federal law enforcement, were seen arriving at a location where authorities have descended less than two miles from Nancy Guthrie’s home.
The area –– a residential street –– has been blocked off by Pima County officials.
A first group of cars included marked sheriff’s units, while a second group included a federal evidence truck, according to CNN producers on the ground.
A SWAT vehicle was seen departing the scene earlier, while forensics trucks remain at the location.
Disappearance would be hard to notice in Catalina Foothills neighborhood, says neighbor
A woman who lives near Nancy Guthrie’s home in the Catalina Foothills, north of Tucson, said it would be difficult to notice a disappearance or kidnapping in the area.
“We have a lot of elderly people that live in this neighborhood,” Marla Handler told CNN’s Laura Coates.
“The homes are not right next to each other… So it’s very difficult to see if there’s a disappearance, a kidnapping in one home, the next house would not even know about it.”
Handler said she did not find any useful footage to hand over to police, despite having “very extensive security on our home as well as our street.”
SWAT and forensic vehicles seen near Guthrie's home
More than a dozen law enforcement vehicles were seen at a location two miles near Nancy Guthrie’s home, including a SWAT vehicle that recently departed.
At least two forensics trucks were also observed at the scene, according to CNN producers on the ground.
“A lot of those vehicles and those types of trucks that Pima County has we have seen in some other locations and some other scenes where they have been collecting evidence,” CNN’s Ed Lavandera said. “So clearly that kind of work is going on here tonight.”
Pima County Sheriff's Department says "a written statement is forthcoming" tonight
Pima County Sheriff’s Department said there is no press conference scheduled for tonight regarding the Guthrie investigation, but that “a written statement is forthcoming,” according to a post on X.
Law enforcement activity taking place two miles from Nancy Guthrie’s home

Stood at a “checkpoint” less than two miles from Guthrie’s home, CNN’s Ed Lavandera told Laura Coates “law enforcement activity is going on right now” but the reason for the officers’ presence is yet to be confirmed.
“This could turn out to be nothing, it could turn out to be significant. We just don’t know at this point,” Lavandera said, recalling “similar kinds of activity” earlier this week when a man later released was detained in Rio Rico, Arizona.
He described one officer blocking off the roadway and “a huge amount of interest” from neighbors gathering in the area, “especially given that this kind of activity is unfolding so close to where Nancy Guthrie lives.”
“That is definitely something that’s causing a great deal of concerns for residents here in the neighborhood. So we will continue to monitor,” he added.
Earlier this evening, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told CNN that investigators could not confirm whether DNA recently obtained on Guthrie’s property belonged to a suspect.
Nanos also said officials are looking into whether they can recover footage from other cameras on Nancy Guthrie’s property, after video from her doorbell system led to thousands of tips.
“It is possible … that there could be even more videos from the property or inside the home,” Lavandera said.
Still no indication of Nancy Guthrie’s location or her abductor’s identity, source says
As authorities continue the investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, a law enforcement source said Friday that officials have still not identified her location or the identity of her abductor.
Authorities are appealing to the public for any tips that may help them solve the case.
Authorities have encouraged anyone with information or tips to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI, 88-CRIME, 520-351-4900, or tips.fbi.gov.
What family members and officials have said about Nancy Guthrie's health
Nancy Guthrie is in fragile health, as noted in Savannah Guthrie’s emotional video last Wednesday in which she pleaded with whoever has her mother to reach out.
“Our mom is a kind, faithful, loyal, fiercely loving woman of goodness and light. She has grandchildren that adore her and crowd around her and cover her with kisses. Her health, her heart is fragile,” Savannah said in the tearful video message.
Nancy Guthrie is in “constant pain” and needs medication to prevent suffering and to survive, her daughter said. She is without that medication, according to Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos.
Nancy has a pacemaker, according to a source briefed on the investigation. She is “of great sound mind” but has limited mobility and “couldn’t walk 50 yards,” Nanos has said.
“The clock is ticking here because the victim is so uniquely vulnerable due to her age, due to her physical ailments and things of that nature,” Andrew McCabe, CNN senior law enforcement analyst and former deputy director of the FBI, said last Thursday. “The stress of being detained in the way she likely is, is just enormous for anyone, and particularly for … an older person like her.”
Authorities previously said deputies checked pharmacies and local hospitals for any sign of the woman or an effort to get medication for her.
Nancy Guthrie's community is missing one of its "quiet leaders," longtime friend says

Nancy Guthrie’s sudden and shocking absence has left a hole not only in the lives of her family but the many people who she worked with to advance causes she cared deeply about.
Guthrie’s longtime friend, Jacqueline Sharkey, said the 84-year-old is a constant unifying force in the organizations she is a part of, including her church and local advocacy groups.
Guthrie’s disappearance has left a “tremendous tear in the fabric of the community,” Sharkey said on “AC360.”
“Nancy is one of those quiet leaders in a community, part of the fabric of the community,” she said. “In each organization Guthrie embraced,” her friend said, Guthrie was an “insightful member, organizing people together in her own way.”
Sharkey met Guthrie through her daughter, Savannah, after she was Savannah’s journalism professor at the University of Arizona. Nancy Guthrie later became a vital contributor to the college’s journalist advisory council. In the 1990s, the two women were part of a small group that successfully organized to keep the state’s poison information hotline up and running when it was facing budget cuts, she said.
“Our hope is that when Nancy comes back, she can continue to show us how to live a life that’s meaningful.”
Experts says "no doubt" Pima County sheriff and FBI are closely collaborating
Andrew McCabe, a CNN senior law enforcement analyst, said he has “no doubt” that the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI are working together closely to find Nancy Guthrie.
“I think as a result of years and years of watching, you know, these things on television, people have a sense that there’s always conflict between the feds and the locals. It’s really not the case,” McCabe said.

TMZ receives third letter claiming to know identity of kidnapper, founder says

Harvey Levin, the founder of TMZ, said the outlet received a third letter from a person claiming to know the identity of who abducted Nancy Guthrie and that they now want the full $100,000 FBI reward in bitcoin.
In the letter, the person told TMZ that they don’t trust the FBI and that is why they are using the outlet as an intermediary, Levin told CNN’s Erin Burnett.
The person said he wants a fraction of a bitcoin worth $50,000 up front and that they would provide “the name of the main individual” and tracking information, Levin said.
“He also says he will not touch the $50,000 until an arrest is made and once that happens, they can then deposit the other $50 (thousand) and he’ll take the money,” Levin said.
The letter also included some “ominous references to Nancy,” Levin said.
Sheriff's office provides updates on Nancy Guthrie case: Doorbell video, DNA, and 30,000 tips. Here's the latest

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos spoke with CNN’s Ed Lavandera Friday, providing new updates on the relentless search for Nancy Guthrie, who has been missing for nearly two weeks.
The heart of Tucson is weighed down by grief and frustration, as a community desperate for answers has seen little clarity on Guthrie’s whereabouts or the direction of the investigation.
Yet despite the uncertainty, authorities say the search is far from over. More than 30,000 tips have poured in from the public, each carefully reviewed and investigated.
“I believe she will be found,” Nanos told CNN. “I believe we are working as hard as we can to do that as fast as we can.”
Here’s the latest on the investigation:
- Gloves and DNA discovered and under analysis: Several gloves have been recovered as part of the investigation, with the closest discovered roughly two miles from Nancy Guthrie’s home, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. Investigators have also found DNA, though it’s unclear who it belongs to. The department hasn’t said where it was located but confirmed it was from someone outside Guthrie’s close contacts. Evidence needing forensic analysis is being sent to the same out-of-state lab used from the start of the investigation to maintain consistency, the sheriff’s department said.
- Doorbell camera video provides biggest leads yet: The doorbell camera video from Guthrie’s home recovered by the FBI has given investigators the “biggest leads we’ve had,” Nanos told CNN. After releasing the video showing a man at Guthrie’s front door, authorities received nearly 5,000 calls within hours, Nanos said. Hundreds of investigators are reviewing tips.
- Joint effort with the FBI: Nanos reaffirmed the Pima County Sheriff’s Department works closely with the FBI. “The FBI and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department are joined at the hips,” he said. He emphasized the long-standing partnership, noting personnel have been assigned to work out of the FBI’s office for years, long before Guthrie’s disappearance. President Donald Trump said Friday, “Progress has been made” since the FBI got involved.
- Neighbors show support at tribute site: Tucson residents have been visiting a tribute site near Guthrie’s home, leaving flowers, a cherub, and notes of encouragement as they plead for her return. Many described the emotional toll of the 13-day search and expressed hope investigators can bring Guthrie home safe.
