
Alex MacCallum is the Chief Operating Officer of CNN Worldwide, where she leads strategy, product development, design, data, growth marketing, strategic partnerships and operations for CNN globally.
MacCallum is an experienced product, business and media executive with decades of experience transforming newsrooms. Under her stewardship, CNN launched its direct-to-consumer business, establishing a critical new source of revenue to support its journalism. Initially a digital paywall across articles, she led the expansion to include a premium streaming offering, All Access. In parallel, she has spearheaded a broader digital transformation, driving the redesign of CNN’s core products and introducing features across platforms that drive engagement, including vertical video, live streaming, and a re-design and modernization of CNN’s products.
Prior to CNN, she served as Chief Revenue Officer at the Washington Post overseeing subscriptions, partnerships and advertising. During her tenure, MacCallum helped evolve the Post’s business model, changing the structure of its advertising team and evolving how cross-functional work happens across the company.
Before the Post, MacCallum served as Global Head of Product for CNN Worldwide and General Manager of CNN+ where she managed product, data, design, growth marketing and business operations. In that role, MacCallum led cross-functional teams in the launch of the streaming product CNN+ and also re-structured the core CNN.com product teams to better serve audiences.
Before that, she spent eight years at The New York Times in various roles, including Head of Product for Standalone Products, a portfolio that included Cooking, Games, Wirecutter, Audio and Kids, and as the founding Masthead editor for Audience in the newsroom. She was also the founding product leader for NYT Cooking, leading the creation and growth of the product in partnership with editorial. Additionally, she oversaw NYT Video, re-focusing the team on user-oriented formats and experiences.
MacCallum began her career in media at the Washington Post and was the first news editor for the Huffington Post. She graduated from Brown University and holds a law degree from U.C. Berkeley School of Law.
