Trump arrives at the Blue House

Details surrounding Khashoggi's death must be shared by Saudi Arabia, Erdogan says

All the facts and details surrounding the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi and those who killed him must be brought to light, Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday.

Jamal Khashoggi was killed in Istanbul in October 2018.

Erdogan said he had not met Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during the G20 summit, but insisted that he needed to shed light on the perpetrators of Khashoggi’s killing.

The Turkish President has repeatedly criticized Saudi Arabia and singled out the crown prince after the 59-year-old journalist was killed after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October 2018.

He reiterated that the suspects must also be tried in Istanbul because “the incident took place in our country.”

“There are certain suspects that we know of and they need to be tried in Istanbul because that’s where the crime was committed.”

While Saudi Arabia initially denied any knowledge of Khashoggi’s death, officials later said a group of rogue operators were responsible – many of whom belong to the Saudi crown prince’s inner circle.

Trump arrives in South Korea

US President Donald Trump has arrived in South Korea after landing at Osan Air Force Base, just south of Seoul.

The President walked down the stairs of Air Force One slowly, before being greeted by a small cadre of officials, including US Ambassador to South Korea Harry Harris.

Trump is now expected to be flown by helicopter to US Army Garrison Yongsan Landing Zone and then head to the Blue House, where he will meet South Korean President Moon Jae-in for dinner.

Russia's S-400 missile defense system will be delivered to Turkey in July, Erdogan says

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he expected a Russian-made S-400 missile defense system to be delivered on time.

“Delivery of the system to Turkey is proceeding as planned, and there has been no setback in the deal with Moscow,” Erdogan told reporters at the G20 summit.

He added that he was expecting it to be delivered during the first half of July.

Erdogan explained that Ankara had decided to purchase the Russian S-400s in 2017 after efforts to purchase an air defense system from the US failed. Joint production of the missiles and its technology transfer are a priority for Turkey, he added.

As for possible sanctions from the US, Erdogan said President Trump had pledged “no such thing will happen.”

When asked if Trump had given him 100% assurance that sanctions will not happen, Erdogan said: “For now it does not look like that. It is out of question between two strategic partners. I think it should not happen.”

American officials had urged Turkey to buy US Patriot missiles, arguing the Russian system would be incompatible with NATO systems and expose U.S. F-35 fighter jets to possible Russian subterfuge.

Turkey, however, emphasized that the S-400 would not be integrated into NATO systems and would not pose a threat to the alliance.

Trump heads to Seoul after G20 summit

US President Donald Trump has left Japan following the conclusion of the G20 summit.

Air Force One is making the 90-minute flight to the Osan Air Base, just south of Seoul in South Korea. There Trump will meet the nation’s president Moon Jae-in, and potentially see North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the demilitarized zone (DMZ).

Russia is interested in improving relations with the US, Putin says

It’s up to Washington to decide how to build its relations with Russia, President Vladimir Putin said Saturday in response to a question over whether he is expecting more sanctions.

“We will do whatever is possible to change the situation to the better,” Putin said during a news conference in Osaka.

“I think we have mutual understanding that we have to get out of the situation that was created until today as well as with our partners from the United Kingdom.”

The Russian President added that he was also interested in developing more business initiatives between the countries.

Trump has wrapped up the press conference

US President Donald Trump has just finished the press conference and left the stage.

During the press conference, Trump fielded questions about China trade, Huawei, climate change, Saudi Arabia, domestic US politics, and more.

This is his last scheduled event in Osaka, Japan, following the end of the G20 summit earlier this afternoon.

Next, he’s headed to Seoul, where he is set to meet with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, and potentially see North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the demilitarized zone (DMZ).

Trump: US and China "can help each other"

US President Donald Trump speaks during a press conference on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Osaka on June 29.

When asked about what type of relationship the US and China should have, during a press conference in Osaka, US President Donald Trump said that they could be “strategic partners.”

Relations between the US and China have become increasingly tense since Trump entered the White House in 2017, with Beijing facing economic and diplomatic pushback.

But Trump has regularly praised Chinese leader Xi Jinping and said that the two countries can work together.

“And right now China isn’t open to the US … That shouldn’t have been allowed to happen,” he said.

Trump says he did raise Khashoggi murder with MBS

US President Donald Trump clarified that he did raise Jamal Khashoogi’s murder in his meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman – but said he would “not comment” on intelligence when pressed on the CIA’s assessment of Prince Mohammed’s involvement.

“I did mention it to him very strongly,” Trump said when asked about raising the brutal murder. “That was a bad event.”

“I asked him what was happening,” Trump told reporters.

When asked about the CIA’s reported assessment by US intelligence sources that Prince Mohammed authorized the murder of Khashoogi, Trump said he “cannot comment on intelligence.”

“We can declassify… the truth is I don’t want to talk about intelligence,” Trump said.

Abe says he encouraged Xi and Trump to establish a "stable economic relationship"

Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said he met with both Xi Jinping and Donald Trump during the G20 and pushed the two leaders to “establish a stable economic relationship.”

In his closing press conference as the president of the G20 Summit in Osaka, Abe said, “I spoke to them of the great importance for the leaders of the largest and second largest economies of the world to establish a stable economic relationship through constructive discussion.”

Abe also highlighted the work of the G20 leaders on the “Osaka Blue Ocean Vision” which will work to reduce marine plastic litter. He said that the desire “to hand over a better planet to the next generation is shared by everyone.”

Speaking on tensions between Iran and the US, Abe touted his own work in Iran said there was a “rising voice of concern from various countries” on the situation in the Middle East. Abe said he would like to continue to collaborate with the international community on relaxing tensions there.

Trump on climate change: "I'm not looking to put companies out of business"

US President Donald Trump defended his stance on climate change and the withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accord at the press conference in Osaka.

When asked about climate change, Trump replied, “We have the best numbers we’ve ever had recently, and I’m not looking to put our companies out of business… I’m not looking to create a standard that is so high that we’re going to lose 20 to 25% of our production.”

He concluded: “I don’t like it, I don’t like it.”

Trump allowed ZTE to buy US products again as a "personal favor" to Xi

US President Donald Trump said that he hadn’t taken Huawei off a list of foreign firms deemed to undermine US national security.

But he reiterated that he’d allow Huawei to once again buy products from US companies.

It looks to be the second time that Trump has eased pressure on a Chinese technology company after talking to Xi.

In July 2018, Trump lifted restrictions on Chinese technology company ZTE which were restricting it from buying US parts, severely damaging their business.

Trump said at the G20 press conference that he had removed the restrictions as a “personal favor” to Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

Trump says census decision "very unfortunate"

US President Donald Trump lamented the Supreme Court’s decision to block the addition of a citizenship question on the forthcoming US census.

He called the decision “very unfortunate” and said, as he tweeted earlier this week, that his administration is “looking” at legal options to stop the census.

He said the price of the census was “shocking.”

Trump said the Supreme Court decision “wasn’t a real decision,” calling it “very strange” and “very sad” and the process “very convoluted.”

The addition of the question could impact the balance of power in states and the House of Representatives, which are based on total population. Adding the question, critics say, could result in minorities being undercounted. Writing for a 5-4 majority, Chief Justice John Roberts concluded that there was sufficient reason for concern about why the Commerce Department wanted to add the question.

Trump shot back Saturday when pressed on whether his administration was playing politics with the citizenship question.

“Who’s really playing politics? Check it out, you tell me who’s really playing politics,” he said.

Trump says it won’t be a bad sign if Kim doesn’t show up at DMZ

US President Donald Trump said he’s hoping to give a “quick hello” to Kim Jong Un tomorrow at the DMZ, but insisted it would not be a bad sign if he doesn’t show up.

“No, of course I thought of that,” Trump said when asked if it should be interpreted as a bad sign if Kim failed to meet him, noting that he expects critics to say “Oh, he was stood up” should that happen.

Asked if he knew that to be a fact, Trump said his team “got a call very quickly” after his tweet, adding, “A lot of people follow it.”

As for what he would expect for a potential meeting, Trump said, “We’re not talking about extended – just a quick hello.”

Trump says Harris-Biden squabble overblown

President Trump says a squabble between two of his potential Democratic rivals was given too much attention.

Speaking at a news conference in Japan, Trump said Sen. Kamala Harris was overly praised for her rebuke of former Vice President Joe Biden for his opposition to federal mandated school bussing.

Asked if he viewed Harris as a tough challenger, Trump said it was too early to tell.

“You never know who’s going to be tough. You never know,” Trump said. “The one that you think is going to be tough turned out to be not much.”

Trump defends joking with Putin about election interference

US President Donald Trump was asked to clarify his sentiments to Russian President Vladimir Putin when he appeared to make light of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

“You have to take a look at the word. I did say it,” Trump said during a press conference in Osaka.

On Friday, Trump lightheartedly told Putin, “Don’t meddle in the election” when asked by a reporter if the topic would come up during their bilateral meeting. The offhand remark, perhaps an attempt at levity, drew swift criticism.

Trump said he had a “tremendous discussion” with the Russian leader, and suggested it came up again later in their meeting.

He added that they discussed other topics as well, including nuclear purchases and other arms control.

Trump says Huawei issue will be saved for end of US-China trade talks

US President Donald Trump said Friday he would save the issue of Huawei for the end of US-China trade talks.

“We mentioned Huawei,” Trump said of his talks with President Xi Jinping of China earlier Saturday. “We’ll have to save that for the very end.”

The announcement appears to contradict previous assessments by US government officials that Huawei poses a spying risk to Western infrastructure networks.

Trump called the matter “very complex” and “highly scientific,” but said the matter of Meng Wanzhou, the Huawei executive who was arrested in Canada, didn’t come up.

Trump: With a wall, immigrant father and daughter who drowned "would be saved"

Speaking at a press conference in Osaka, US President Donald Trump said that if his border wall had been built the lives of migrants could be saved.

Trump was referring to the viral picture of a father and his young daughter who drowned in the Rio Grande trying to get to the United States.

The US President again pushed for tougher border control policies, saying that illegal immigration was “very unfair.”

“You have millions of people on line for years to get into a country. They take tests, they study … and these people have worked hard, they’ve been on line for seven, eight, nine years, then someone walks in. Honestly it’s very unfair,” he said.

Trump on Jamal Khashoggi: Saudi Arabia is "a terrific ally"

At an ongoing press conference in Osaka, US President Donald Trump criticized Saudi Arabia’s persecution and detention of citizens, but deflected a question about the alleged murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

With that being said, I’m extremely angry and unhappy about a thing like that taking place. But as of this moment, more than 13 people are being prosecuted and I hear the numbers are going to be going up.”

Afterward, CNN’s Jim Sciutto tweeted: “False: US intel and UN found evidence Crown Prince directed the killing.”
