Jonathan Van Ness isn’t here for your social constructs.
The “Queer Eye” star and advocate is making headlines for telling Out Magazine in a new interview that he’s recently started identifying as nonbinary and gender nonconforming.
This, of course, is not new information.
Back in April, the hair guru spoke to The Lily about his evolving gender identity, saying, “the older I get, the more I feel like I’m non-binary or gender nonconforming.”
Van Ness has also been proudly blurring the lines of gender with his clothes and style since before he and the rest of the Fab Five became breakout stars thanks to their Netflix show.
Van Ness, who confirmed to Out that he still prefers masculine pronouns, said that he only recently became aware there was a term that reflected his embrace of femme fashion.
“I didn’t think I was allowed to be nonconforming or genderqueer or nonbinary – I was just always like ‘a gay man’ because that’s just the label I thought I had to be,” he said.
He added: “Like, some days I feel like a man, but then other days I feel like a woman. I don’t really – I think my energies are really all over the place…Any opportunity I have to break down stereotypes of the binary, I am down for it, I’m here for it.”
Van Ness is currently promoting a new partnership with nail polish company Essie, for which he is the first non-female spokesperson.
