Here’s your chance to own Andy Warhol’s shoes – sort of.
On Tuesday, Sotheby’s London is auctioning a portfolio of 18 shoe prints by the famed pop artist for an estimated £100,000 to £150,000 ($144,350 to $216,525) as part of a Prints & Multiples sale.
From 1953 to 1959, Warhol worked as a commercial artist for magazines and ad agencies, including a stint as the sole illustrator for defunct New York shoe brand I. Miller, for whom he created these illustrations.
The set hitting the auction block – comprising 16 lithographs of individual shoes, as well as a double cover – was hand-dyed by Warhol and his friends at coloring parties he hosted around 1955. (In total, they colored about 100 prints of each illustration.)
The playful captions, which often riffed on pop culture (for example, “I dream of jeannie with the light brown shoes”), were written by poet Ralph Pomeroy, and printed by Warhol’s mother, Julia Warhola.
