1,000 Guineas: Hermosa wins to give trainer Aidan O’Brien a weekend double

CNN  —

On Saturday, trainer Aidan O’Brien was described as a “genius” as he celebrated a 10th victory in the 2,000 Guineas.

Twenty-four hours later, he proved once again why he is regarded as one of the best in horse racing history as the O’Brien-trained Hermosa won the 1,000 Guineas to give the Irishman his second Classic win at Newmarket in as many days.

Hermosa, ridden by Wayne Lordan, won by a length to secure O’Brien his 5th 1,000 Guineas win and fourth double in season-opening Classics. Lady Kaya was second, while favorite Qabala finished third.

The race is held over the same course at Newmarket a day after the 2,000 Guineas but this is for fillies only.

It was first staged in 1814 and represents the first leg of the fillies’ Triple Crown – with The Oaks and St. Leger – but this is rarely attempted. The last horse to win the fillies Triple Crown was Oh So Sharp in 1985.
