Billie Eilish wore her Oscar de la Renta Met Gala dress on one condition

Billie Eilish stunned New York at the Met Gala on Monday night as she channeled Old Hollywood in an dramatic Oscar de la Renta gown.

The evening marked the 19-year-old superstar’s first appearance at the legendary fashion event and she made sure that it was a debut no one would forget. In an example of true star power, Eilish convinced the house of Oscar de la Renta to go completely fur-free before she stepped out onto the red carpet.

Eilish, a vegan who has voiced her support for animal rights, said on Instagram that it was “an honor to wear this dress knowing that going forward Oscar de la Renta will be completely fur-free,” in the future and went on to thank Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim – the label’s creative directors – for listening to her on the matter.

She stated that she was “beyond thrilled” the team heard her on the issue and “have now made a change that makes an impact for the greater good, not only for animals but also for our planet and environment too.”

The “Happier Than Ever” singer also said she was honored to “have been a catalyst and to have been heard on this matter,” then urged “all designers to do the same.”

Lupita Nyong'o arrived wearing a denim gown by Versace, paired with navy blue eyeshadow and big jewels.

While speaking to Keke Palmer on a Vogue livestream, she revealed she drew inspiration from her mother Diana Ross' film "Mahogany."

J Balvin and "RuPaul's Drag Race" winner Symone both arrived wearing Moschino. Balvin wore a suit and matching balaclava covered in florals, alongside a stack of necklaces. Jennifer Lopez hit the Met Museum steps wearing a custom Ralph Lauren outfit, which channeled the spirit of the Wild West. Donning a faux fur stole, she opted for a deep brown dress embellished with crystal drops, braided silk and leather trims -- topped off with a cowboy hat that completed the look.

"Good 4 U" singer Olivia Rodrigo made her Met Gala debut dressed in a sheer feather and lace Saint Laurent jumpsuit. She paired the look with a pair of chunky black platform heels.

British tennis player and reigning U.S Open Champion, Emma Raducanu, wore Chanel at the Met Gala.

"Euphoria" star Hunter Schafer wore a silver leather Prada two-piece ensemble to the glamorous fundraiser. But it was her opaque contact lenses and the gigantic silver spider placed over her face that drew attention.

Frank Ocean debuted a lime green hairstyle at the event, wearing a black Prada outfit and a necklace from his jewelry line Homer. He was accompanied by a robotic friend, dressed in a patterned tracksuit, that moved during interviews.

Simone Biles wore a show-stopping gown made by Area in collaboration with Athleta. Her Swarovski-embellished skirt weighed 88 pounds, according to Vogue, and required six people to assist her up the steps. On Instagram, she revealed that the skirt was detachable and hid a fringed cocktail dress -- which she then removed to unveil her final look: a black starry bodysuit.

New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made the statement "Tax the Rich" through a white tulle-hemmed mermaid gown by Brooklyn-based designer Brother Vellies.

As with many women on the night, plus-size model Precious Lee opted for a blazer-inspired silhouette with a dramatic fringe and power shoulders. Designed by Area, the crystalline dress was styled with matching glittery accessories.

Kendall Jenner dazzled in a barely-there glittering Givenchy gown with a high crystal choker and shoulder details. She said on Instagram that the dress was inspired by Audrey Hepburn and was a reference to "My Fair Lady."

Friends Kendall Jenner and model Gigi Hadid held hands on the red carpet. Wearing her red hair in a high ponytail, the latter channeled the spirit of old Hollywood in a classic corseted white sheath dress by Prada and black evening gloves.

Singer Alicia Keys arrived in an all-white gown from AZ Factory and jewels from Van Cleef & Arpels. Speaking to reporters on the carpet, she added her red lipstick was an homage to the "New York lip."

Naomi Osaka brought her Japanese and Haitian background together in an ensemble by Louis Vuitton. Her sister Mari Osaka, a fashion designer, worked with creative director Nicolas Ghesquirre to create the look which incorporated a Japanese obi belt and ruffles. On Instagram, Mari said the outfit referenced Haitian Quadrille dresses.

Shawn Mendes and Camilla Cabello arrived together for their Met Gala debut. Mendes went bare-chested under a leather jacket, while Cabello wore a sequined purple cut-out gown.

Long-time Met Gala attendee Ciara wore an American football-inspired outfit by Dundas. The neon green sequined dress featured cut outs as well as the number 3, a reference to her husband Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. Naturally, she accessorized with a glittering football clutch.

Actress Megan Fox sported pinup-style bangs in a daring red Dundas dress with a lace-up plunging v-neck and a high slit. According to the label's press release, the outfit was inspired by Art Deco aesthetics.

"Ozark" actress Julia Garner wore a sheer Stella McCartney Swarovski gown, featuring a staggering 132,240 crystals, paired with Adidas by Stella McCartney shoes.

Saweetie's rainbow ombré Christian Cowan dress trailed behind her as she walked the Met's famous stairs. She revealed later told Vogue that the colors were inspired by her Filipino heritage, as well as the Black American heritage flag.

"Schitt's Creek" star Dan Levy arrived in custom Loewe. The structural outfit featured artworks by artist David Wojnarowicz, depicting two men kissing, and was finished off with black embellished boots.

Met Gala co-chair Amanda Gorman wore a bespoke blue Vera Wang gown and a silver laurel crown. Representing a reimagined Statue of Liberty, she held an Edie Parker clutch that said "Give Me Your Tired" a reference to the poem at the statue's base.

"Dune" star Timothée Chalamet mixed streetwear and black-tie with a shrunken white-satin suit jacket and billowing white pants, by Haider Ackerman, tucked into a pair of white Converse sneakers. Underneath, he wore a layer of Rick Owens.

Wearing an all-black look designed by her boyfriend Reuben Selby, "Game of Thrones" actress Maisie Williams told E! that the look was inspired by "The Matrix."

Met Gala honorary chairman Anna Wintour departed eschewed Chanel -- her longtime go-to for the event -- instead opting for a custom pressed-flower Oscar de la Renta gown with a tiered pleated skirt.

Gymnast Nia Dennis made a dramatic entrance wearing a blue Stella McCartney dress, which featured a sheer mesh skirt. As she approached the steps, she removed her skirt to reveal a crystal-embellished blue bodysuit and launched into acrobatics.

Social media stars were represented on the red carpet, with YouTube star Emma Chamberlain wearing a gold cut-out Louis Vuitton gown with chain straps.

New York congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney made a statement with a garment emblazoned with "equal rights for women."

The Met Gala cream carpet began with a performance by the Brooklyn United Marching Band wearing red, white and blue.

Alex Bolen, chief executive of Oscar de la Renta, said in a statement to CNN that he was endeavoring to “surround” himself with people who have different points of view – particularly young people.

“I thought a lot about what Oscar said – he was a big fan of fur, by the way – that the one thing he really worried about in the fashion business was his eye getting old,” Bolen said.

Eilish channeled Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly in her décolleté-bearing peach gown, which came with a fitted bodice and lengthy tulle train that required the support of four helpers.

The look further cemented the pop giant’s shift in style, as she continues to move away from the trademark Goth look, that she first burst onto the scene with back in 2019, in favor of pastel colors and a sleek blond haircut.
