Scarab were the first American team to participate in Formula One. The marque's cars and their Fiat transporter are coming up for auction in the UK this September. Bonhams
The team was owned by Lance Reventlow -- heir to the Woolworth fortune. This is the car he drove during Scarab's one and only F1 season in 1960. It is expected to fetch as much as $1.5 million in an auction at the Goodwood Revival meeting on September 12. Bonhams

The V8 Chevrolet made the Scarab fast, but the car were ultimately doomed to fail -- in 1960 racing car design was moving on, with engine's starting to be placed towards the rear of the car -- which made them easier to handle at high speed. Bonhams
It goes to show how F1 engineering has always evolved rapidly. The Scarab team would only ever complete 87 laps in F1 racing. Bonhams
The Scarab was named after the Egyptian "good luck" beetle, but it didn't bring Reventlow much good fortune. He continued to race but died in a plane crash at the age of 36. Bonhams
The Fiat transporter used to ferry the cars from race to race has a guide price of $900,000 to $1.2 million. The auction is being handled by Bonhams of London. Bonhams
James Knight, Bonhams International Group Motoring Director, said in a statement: "The Scarab team cars were fantastically quick, but unfortunately for Reventlow, not quick enough in their development." Bonhams
