Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London has said that his "thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones at this difficult time."

Meanwhile, the Home Office has said the reported stabbing is being investigated by police.

“We are aware of an incident at West George Street in Glasgow, which is currently being investigated by the police,” a Home Office spokesperson said.

Speaking in response to reports of a police officer being stabbed in an incident in Glasgow earlier today, David Hamilton, Chairman of the Scottish Police Federation said: “Whilst there is understandable and considerable public interest in the major incident in Glasgow earlier today, our focus at this time is in assisting the family of our colleague who has been seriously injured.

This is obviously an anxious time for them and we ask that they be left alone as their attentions are very obviously directed towards the care of their loved one," Hamilton said.

"Our thoughts, prayers, and best wishes are with our colleague, his family and friends, and all colleagues affected by this incident at this time.”

The US Ambassador to the UK has expressed sympathy for those affected by the reported stabbing in Glasgow.

Humza Yousaf, Scotland's Justice Minister has taken to Twitter to urge people not to "speculate on any of the details around Glasgow incident."

Reports coming out of the incident in Glasgow are "extremely concerning," leader of the UK opposition Labour Party Keir Starmer said on Twitter.

"Extremely concerning reports about an incident in the West George Street area of Glasgow. My thoughts are with all of those who are involved. 

"Please follow the @GreaterGlasgPol advice and avoid the area," Starmer tweeted.

One male suspect was shot by armed police, and one police officer was injured and is being treated in hospital, Scottish police said.

In a video taken in West George Street, Glasgow, a heavy police presence can be seen around a building. Footage appears to show armed police entering the building.

Greater Glasgow Police said on Twitter on Friday that the situation was "contained" and there is no danger to the public.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is "deeply saddened" by the incident in Glasgow, he tweeted on Friday.
