More than 40 countries who registered to run in the Iranian capital's first marathon, billed as an opportunity to "build bridges," however women were left disappointed after learning they could not take part in the official event.

Athletes began the marathon at the city's Azadi Stadium and also passed the Azadi Tower, one of Iran's most famous landmarks. Local authorities blocked the roads in order for the event to take place.
