Zoo is launching an investigation into incident

CNN  —

An investigation has been launched after pictures posted on social media appear to show a child inside a rhino enclosure at Dublin Zoo.

The photos, posted over the weekend, show a boy standing on a rock on the same side of a fence housing the zoo’s southern white rhinos.

In one picture, posted by architect Ciaran Ferrie, an adult can be seen taking pictures of the boy inside the enclosure.

Ferrie tweeted the picture with the caption: “Just a child inside the Rhino enclosure at Dublin Zoo.”

A spokeswoman for Dublin Zoo told CNN that the matter was being reviewed internally.

The incident occurred at the African Savanna habitat where the zoo’s southern white rhinos can be viewed as well as zebras, giraffes and ostriches.

A second picture posted in response to Ferrie’s, by fellow zoo-goer Adrianna Straszewska, showed an adult holding the boy’s hand along with the caption: “@ccferrie @DublinZoo this man had the child in behind the fence for good 20 minutes !”

Earlier this year, a silverback gorilla was shot and killed by staff at Cincinnati Zoo after a three-year-old boy slipped into the animal’s enclosure.
