Andy Murray re-hires Ivan Lendl

Beaten by Novak Djokovic in the opening two grand slam finals of this year, Andy Murray has turned to his former coach Ivan Lendl to boost his fortunes.

Murray said Sunday that he had re-hired the legendary Lendl, who helped him to win the U.S. Open, Wimbledon and Olympic gold in a purple patch through the 2012-13 seasons.

Citing his dislike of the traveling required in the job, former world number one Lendl left Murray’s employ in 2014 to eventually be replaced by former French tennis star Amelie Mauresmo.

With Mauresmo splitting from Murray in May, the Scot has taken the opportunity for a reunion.

“I had two very successful years working with Ivan, he’s single minded and knows what it takes to win the big events. I’m looking forward to Ivan joining the team again and helping me try and reach my goals,” he was quoted on his official website.

Czech-born Lendl, who won eight grand slam titles, is relishing the challenge after having hip replacements.

“I enjoyed working with Andy in the past,” he said.

“Andy and I have always stayed in contact so it should be fun to be part of his team again.”

Lendl will work alongside Murray’s full-time coach, former British Davis Cup player Jamie Delgado and his existing support team.

They will pair up for Murray’s defense of the Queen’s Club title later this week then the grass court grand slam at Wimbledon.

Murray put up his best performance at the recent French Open to reach the final for the first time on the Parisian clay, but was beaten in four sets by the all-conquering Djokovic, who completed a career grand slam.
