Ski queen Lindsey Vonn rounded off another triumphant weekend with victory in Sunday’s World Cup super-G in Zauchensee to complete the double at the Austrian resort.
Fresh from her success in a two-leg sprint race, which saw her match legendary Austrian Annemarie Moser-Proell for World Cup downhill wins, Vonn was buoyant after beating her rival for overall honors, Swiss Lara Gut, into second place.
Austria’s Cornelia Hutter completed the podium, her fourth of the season.
“I’m extremely excited,” Vonn told the official FIS website. “You know, two wins in a weekend is amazing, and it’s the perfect start to the new year.”
Gut finished 0.7 seconds down, making up for her disappointment of failing to finish the downhill race. She still leads her American rival by 38 points in the standings.
Vonn was extending her record for super-G wins to 26 for her 73rd World Cup win.
Win number 72 Saturday was her 36th downhill title, matching Moser-Proell’s 36-year-old mark.
“To be tied with Annemarie is incredible,” Vonn told reporters before later posting a picture on social media alongside the Austrian great.
The victory ensures Vonn leads the downhill World Cup standings by 50 points.
“First run, I think I skied really solidly, and then second run, I was a little bit more conservative because I knew I had a big lead,” Vonn said.
“I knew that everyone was having trouble with the bumps, so I just tried to ski relaxed and it worked.”
In Adelboden in Switzerland, the men finally saw some action Sunday with Norway’s Henrik Kristoffersen taking the slalom from overall World Cup leader Marcel Hirscher of Austria by just 0.06 seconds over two legs.
Alexander Khoroshillov of Russia took third place, 0.60 seconds behind.
In snowy and foggy conditions after the cancellation of Saturday’s racing, Kristoffersen produced a flawless second run to edge Hirscher.
“It’s pretty unbelievable actually” Kristoffersen said.
“That was a really tight race, close race between Marcel and me, but to win here in Adelboden in front of that many spectators and it being a real classic is great. There have been so many big legends winning here before me that to be on that list is really cool.”
