Liverpool has continued its recruitment of homegrown British players with the signing of Burnley striker Danny Ings.

Ings netted 11 goals in 35 Premier League games last season, the 22-year-old’s first in English football’s top flight.

He has agreed personal terms and will move to Anfield on July 1 when his contract expires, though the two clubs are still negotiating a fee – Burnley and his former club Bournemouth are due compensation under transfer rules regarding player development.

Ings is considered one of the rising stars of English football, and has been included in the national Under-21 squad for this month’s European Championship in the Czech Republic.

It is Liverpool’s second signing in a week after Manchester City midfielder James Milner agreed to join the club on Thursday, with the England international’s contract at the Etihad Stadium to expire at the end of this month.

Despite an underwhelming season in which Liverpool finished sixth, failing to qualify for the European Champions League, manager Brendan Rodgers has been given assurances over his future and has started to build for next season.

He is expected to change his striking options, with Mario Balotelli having scored just one league goal since arriving from AC Milan and Rickie Lambert netting two in the top flight after leaving Southampton.

Rodgers hopes to retain highly-rated young forward Raheem Sterling, who has rejected a new contract, while another England international – Daniel Sturridge – is recovering from injury problems that limited him to just 12 league starts in 2014-15.

The previous season Sturridge had helped Liverpool to finish second in the Premier League, scoring a combined 52 goals in tandem with Luis Suarez – who on Saturday clinched a treble of titles with Barcelona as he netted in the Champions League final victory over Juventus.

Rodgers is also expected to have the services of Belgium international Divock Origi, who spent last season on loan at French club Lille after being signed by Liverpool following the 2014 World Cup.

Ings scored 43 goals in 130 appearances in a four-year stay at Burnley, having started his career at Bournemouth.

The Clarets were relegated back to the second tier for next season after finding the net just 28 times in 38 games – the lowest total in the top flight – while Bournemouth was promoted to the Premier League as champion.
