Bayer Leverkusen continue to lose ground on Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich after crashing to a 3-2 defeat at relegation-threatened Freiburg on Saturday.
Sami Hyypia’s side, who lost their last two league matches before the winter break, carried on where they left off before Christmas.
Twice they squandered a lead, before Freiburg made them pay the ultimate price with a winner in dying moments of the match.
Lars Bender had put the visitors in front in the sixth minute before Admir Mehmedi equalized in the 27th minute.
Nine minutes later, Leverkusen had their noses back in front as Simon Rolfes scored, but back came Freiburg in the second half as Jonathan Schmid converted a 53rd-minute free kick.
Leverkusen’s wasteful afternoon was completed when Felix Klaus buried a right-foot shot with seconds of normal time remaining. The winner capped a memorable day for home supporters who can celebrate a second straight league win – a first this season.
The result means Pep Guardiola’s Bayern side are 10 points clear following a 2-0 win at Monchengladbach on Friday night. The result keeps their unbeaten league run going with back-to-back titles seemingly a formality.

Borussia Dortmund, champions two seasons ago, also dropped valuable points on Saturday drawing 2-2 with mid-table Augsburg at the Westfalenstadion.
Jurgen Klopp’s side also squandered a lead twice but held on for a point.
Sven Bender’s 5th minute goal was enough for the home side to go in to the break ahead before Bender scored again, this time at the wrong end, to put Augsburg back on level terms.
The midfielder’s 55th minute own-goal was cancelled out when Nuri Sahin belted home a free kick ten minutes later to put Dortmund back in front. But the lead only lasted seven minutes as Ji Dong-Won scored for the visitors to make it 2-2. And that’s how it stayed.
The draw moves Dortmund up to third on 33 points, ahead of Monchengladbach by virtue of a superior goal difference.
Elsewhere, second-from-bottom Nuremburg ran out 4-0 winners against Hoffenheim while mid-table Mainz earned a 2-1 win away to Stuttgart.
Hannover were also winners away from home, beating Wolfsburg 3-1.
