Jamaican sport continues to be overshadowed by doping after football’s world governing body FIFA announced an unnamed footballer has been provisionally suspended following a positive drugs test.
Traces of a banned substance were found in a sample provided after a 2014 World Cup qualifying match between Jamaica and Honduras on June 11.
The player has foregone his right to have a second “B” sample analyzed and has been handed an initial 30-day suspension along with an unidentified team official, FIFA said in a statement.

“The player and the official have until 12 August to inform FIFA whether they wish to request a hearing,” said FIFA.
“Irrespective of whether or not the player and the official request a hearing, the player, the official and/or the Jamaican FA have until 19 August to submit a statement to FIFA, together with all related and supporting documentary evidence.”

In July, high-profile Jamaican sprinters Asafa Powell and Sherone Simpson both tested positive for banned substances.
Powell, a former 100-meter world record holder who denies knowingly cheating, provided a sample which contained samples of the banned stimulant oxilofrine.
Simpson, a 100m silver medalist at the Beijing Olympics, tested positive for the same substance and also maintains her innocence.
What has been a dark period for Jamaican sprinting began in June when triple Olympic gold medalist Veronica Campbell-Brown was also provisionally suspended after testing positive for banned diuretics.
Campbell-Brown provided a “B” sample, which also tested positive. She denies any wrongdoing.
